Don't know if this has been posted here in the past but I'd thought I'd give it a try. Obviously BAB and ACs have gone up in 3.5 as the overall numberage (sic?) has gone up since 1st ed.

My question is who can remember the highest AC of any character or monster publised by TSR in 1st edition?

My answer is Indra the India progenetor Diety from Dieties and Demi Gods. I believe he/she had an AC of -12 or the 3.5 equivilent of AC: 32. This is also the same AC as the Tarrasque now in 3.5 it used to be -3 or AC: 23!! in 1st edition.

Another comparason is Lolth whos 1st ed AC was -10 or 30 and her 3.5 counterpart it is 73!!! or -53 in the old 1st edition. Granted the Dieties and Demi gods in 3.5 have been made to be effectively invincible but wow!!!

Any other comparasions out there?

The highest AC in 1st Edition was 10. If you mean the best, then it was -10. In 2nd Edition, the rules were the same, except that a couple dragons ended up with ACs below -10 (I think -13 was the best I saw). There were plenty of optional rules that allowed the ACs to drop more, but simply by-the-book, nothing better than -10.

Well when I/we speak of ACs in 1st ed you generally say a high AC was in the negatives, it went backwards I guess :) Yeah the -10 barrier was pretty well the norm in 1st ed also was the 400 HP ceiling. 2nd ed (which I did'nt play all that much) did break some of these barriers such as some of the dragons being beefed up with ACs past the -10 barrier.

Although Indra in the dieties and demi gods book had a printed AC of -12 if any of you old timers can back me up. I think he/she wore like +5 plate mail and a +5 shield + dex bonus etc....yep it was possible but rare.
