Complete something [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-10-05, 05:23 PM I know this is gonna be frustrating, but there is a spell in either the complete arcane or complete adventurer (my books are at home) that is level 2 and as a swift action, you can become invisible for one round. I think this is an assasin spell. My question is: If you have a ring of this, can you activate and attack in the same round? My initial feeling is that the answer is no. Why? b/c activating a magic item is a swift action (i think) and the spell casting time is a swift action and you can have no more than one swift action a round. Now, activating the ring could count as the casting time for the spell, I don't know. thanks

08-10-05, 05:32 PM There isn't really a default action type associated with activating magic items. It depends on the type of magic item it is.

As for the ring question, well...first of all it's a custom item. I'm not very good with them :) In general activating an item (by command word etc) is a standard action. I would also say that an item that casts Invisiblity, Swift would be quite expensive.

It would be 'word', swift activation (.05 seconds), then character may act, but the ring would only act for the 1 round unless dispelled by an aggressive action. Essentially, it could be done just a different method of use as the normal ring of invis. So price it as per that item. This item would be good for someone who needs more sneak attack (or what-have-you) opportunities than the normal ring, but also requires command word, and can't be used on multiple attacks, as the spell will only opperate 1/round.

I think the purpose of the original spell is to be able to turn invisible and get a sneak attack for one attack all in one round. It is more of a surprise spell than a sneaky, duration spell, i think.
