if a character with a bowyer skill, smithing skill, and a high inteligence were to make a compound bow what would the stats on it be? i'd guess like a composite great bow damage wise and the cost of a masterwork.
what do you guys think?
p.s. what other skills would be needed to make one?

A compound bow is clearly beyond the ability of a non-fantasy builder, no matter what skills he had. It was patented in 1969.

So first step is to set the DC's to making it, all should be EPIC.

Talking a Bowyer and blacksmith DC of > 50. I think Bowyer 50, Blacksmith 60. And they must have been taught how or made a Knowledge Engineering check of DC 100

I would make them cost twice the value of the equivelent Mightyness, plus an additional 1000 gp.

Now, for the advantages, taken from wikipedia:

Enables the archer to hold the bow fully drawn and take more time to aim.
bow with a much higher draw weight (note normal arrows tend to break, so you need to pay extra).
More consistent pull strength, due to the nature of the bow

Now to translate these the advantages into something like game rules:
1) Archer can spend time aiming a shot, +1 to hit for MEA, +2 for a anything beyond an MEA.
2) If your strength is 14 (+2), so you could normally use a Mighty +2 bow, you may use a Compound +4 bow, getting the +4 to damage. The bow can NOT use normal arrows, only masterwork arrows.
3) Bow gets a +1 to confirm all criticals.

The d20 Modern SRD stats a compound bow as dealing 1d8 x2 damage, with a 40 foot range increment and weighing 3 pounds. You add your strength modifier to damage when using the bow without it having to be designed for a specific strength score, like a composite bow.

WOW! Those stats are pathetic (compared to a composite bow). Everytime I hear anything about d20 Modern and its weapon stats, my dislike for it grows.

Tarkin's stats sound pretty good to me. Except I think I would limit the attack bonus from aiming to +1 and I would eliminate #3. But I do like the "extra" strength damage the bow provides.

Since these bows have adjustable draw weight, you could rule that they could be used by people with a range of strengths. Otherwise, I'd say they're about the size of a shortbow, but use composite longbow range increments and do longbow damage. Profiency wise they could be either long or shortbows.

And yeah, it'd be extremely hard to A)make one and B)come up with the idea. So, I'd make the DC really high, epic-level DCs sound pretty realistic.

I just looked at the d20 Modern SRD. It looks like weapons in general are down graded in that system. So its not a good idea to port the stats from system to the other.

I built it as an Epic Item. It clearly is excessively strong for the d20 modern game.

Keep in mind that in Epic games, arrows start to lose their value in general. Too many easy ways to become immune to them. That is part of why I let it be so strong. Who cares if you can do double strength damage considering that creatures do things like permanent Protection from Arrows on them.

Not meaning to sound like a jerk, but a Permanent Protection from Arrows will only protect you as far as its "damage nullification buffer" allows...

i dont know about that, it really would not be hard to forge pullys and stuff, or carve the actual bow, or even think the idea up, as it would be done by a craftsman that has years of experiance. i believe the real problem is the lack of proper material. arent the compound bows made of fiberglass? another problem is the difficulty to sell it. i would set a high price as only a few people could make them (aas i would introduce it as a new technology) making it not worth the effort.
