Concealment and Ranged Attacks [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-04-05, 07:40 PM I have a question regarding concealment and ranged attacks:

If a Ranger were hiding in some brush that granted 20% miss chance due to concealment, would his ranged attacks also be at a similar penalty? The reason why I ask is if someone had 75% hard cover he wouldn't have any penalty on his ranged attacks so why would he have a penalty for concealment.

03-04-05, 07:47 PM It all depends. If I'm shooting at you from behind a tree, I can see you fine but you've got a tree in your way. However, if there are no trees but we're both in a smoke cloud, I'm going to have difficulty seeing you, as you will have seeing me. Cover is you know where they are and just can't hit them, concealment is you don't know where they are.

To determine whether your target has concealment from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target’s square passes through a square or border that provides concealment, the target has concealment.

What this -means- is as follows... if your ranger is -in- the square that provides concealment (and there is no other concealment on the map), he can choose to trace from the near corner of his square, meaning that the resulting lines do not go through any concealment squares and he has no miss chance. His opponent has to trace to all the ranger's corners to check for concealment, so at least one line will go through his square and the miss chance will apply. I think that should answer your question.

If there is concealment in between both of them, it applies to both of them.

This is why archery rangers eventually get Improved Precise Shot...
