10-10-06, 01:40 PM If a magic user is hit during a round in which he is casting a spell, does he have to make a concentration check to be able to successfully cast it, or does he only need the check if the attack against him is readied in an attempt to break concentration of the spell?

10-10-06, 01:54 PM If he is hit by an effect while casting, he has to make a Concentration check. It does not matter if it is readied or not.

This tends to only be an issue when A) there's been a readied action against the caster or B) you're casting a spell with a casting time longer than a standard action.

10-10-06, 02:07 PM Everything above is correct, but I thought I would attempt to clarify it a bit.

A spell with a casting time of 1 standard action occures so quickly that unless:

1) You incure an AoO
2) Someone has readied an action against you

Then you cast it before anyone else gets to attack you.

The same even applies to 1 standard action spells cast by a sorceror who adds on a metamagic (which means it takes a full action to cast.

However, spells that say "Casting Time: 1 round" or greater, such as the Summon Monster spells, take so long that they do not complete until the begining of your action next round.

As such, if anyone attacks you after you begin to cast but before your next action, you must make a concentration check.
