I know on an attack and saving throw it does, but I'm having difficulty figuring it out for a critical confirmation. What do you think? |

I know on an attack and saving throw it does, but I'm having difficulty figuring it out for a critical confirmation. What do you think? If you roll a 20, you automatically hit. If you roll a 1, you automatically miss. If you roll a 20, and then a 1, you hit, but not for critical. |

I think you meant a miss for the send line... So the confirmation of critical uses the same rules as a normal attack then... ok |
| Zherog04-27-05, 02:56 PM | Correct - rolling a 1 on the confirmation of crit means it's not a crit, but is still a hit. |
| Insane Pixie04-27-05, 03:05 PM | Thank you for catching that! Edit time! |
| VanRiper04-27-05, 03:49 PM | Speaking of critical hits... One of my characters has a +4 longbow with the shocking burst ability. Now, on a critical hit, do I add 3d6 (since the 1d6 shock is done 3 times) + 2d10 for all the electrical damage or just 1d6 + 2d10? Now I read this in the SRD: "A critical hit means that you roll your damage more than once, with all your usual bonuses, and add the rolls together. Unless otherwise specified, the threat range for a critical hit on an attack roll is 20, and the multiplier is x2. Exception: Extra damage over and above a weapon’s normal damage is not multiplied when you score a critical hit." I took the exception to mean sneak attack damage and not the +1d6 shock damage since the shock is part of this weapon's "normal" damage. Is that correct? |
| Sundancer7504-27-05, 04:01 PM | Exception: Extra damage over and above a weapon’s normal damage is not multiplied when you score a critical hit." Sneak attack damage and special damage like shocking, flaming, frost, etc are not multiplied. |
| Derren S.04-27-05, 04:10 PM | Rule of the dumb: When the extra damage comes from rolling additional dice it is not multiplied. When it is a fixed amount then it is. |
| chocobochicken04-27-05, 04:22 PM | Besides, crackling sparks of electricity that flow around a bladed weapon isn't exactly what I'd consider "normal." ;) |

It would do 1d6 + 1d6 on a regular hit, but 1d6 + 2d10 on a crit. |
| MysticTraveler04-27-05, 05:19 PM | I think it would rather do 1d6 [electricity] + 1d8+4 [piercing] damage normally, or 1d6 [electricity] + 3d8+4 [piercing] damage on a critical hit, right? Not sure where you guys got the 2d10 from? |
| Zherog04-27-05, 05:25 PM | The 2d10 comes from the Burst part of the ability. |
| Cog04-28-05, 12:18 AM | On a critical you will do 3d8 (longbow damage x 3 crit multiplier) + 12 (+4 bow enhancement x 3 crit multiplier) + 2d10 (flame burst critical damage). |
| Nom04-28-05, 01:41 AM | +1d6 from shocking. You will notice that the burst damage is "in addition to" the normal elemental damage. So a critical from a shocking burst longbow + 4 is 1d8+4 + 1d8+4 + 1d8+4 (or 3d8+12) from the critical + 1d6 electrical + 2d10 electrical (burst). |
| MysticTraveler04-28-05, 08:23 AM | The 2d10 comes from the Burst part of the ability. Aha, missed the word "burst" thanks. :) Cog & Nom - You know, I thought you only apply bonus damage once regardless of critical hit or otherwise. But you're right, I just checked the PHB, the damage mod applies to each roll, thanks! (argh, my DM's been cheating us!) |
| chocobochicken04-28-05, 08:23 AM | Yep. The normal 1d6 electricity damage is not multiplied, but neither is it replaced. And any bonus damage not in the form of dice is multiplied. So if you're a 10th-level 14 Str paladin smiting evil with a two-handed +2 lance while riding a mount with Spirited Charge and investing 5 points into Power Attack -- and you critical hit! -- your damage would be (1d8+3+2+10+10)x6, or 6d8+150! :D |
| Cog04-28-05, 10:10 AM | +1d6 from shocking. I knew I forgot something... |
| VanRiper04-28-05, 12:51 PM | Thanks everyone :) |
