Confused about Ammunition Costs [Archive] - Wizards Community

In the PHB it says that it costs 6 gp more for a single unit of ammunition to make it masterwork.

Then it has an example of 10 masterwork arrows costing 70 gp. Well here is the confusing part.
70/10 = 7 gp per arrow - 6 gp for masterwork = 1 gp

Yet 1 arrow doesn't cost 1 gp, but 20 arrows do. Each arrow only costs 5 cp.

So shouldn't it be 60.5 gp for 10 masterwork arrows or by unit do they mean the 20 arrows? So you can have 200 masterwork arrows for 70 gp?

The DMG seems to agree with the 7 gp per masterwork arrow, but again see above why that doesn't make sense.

Anybody know what is going on?

For reasons of simplicity, or so it seems, masterwork arrows cost 7 gp; consider the fuss it would take to calculate the cost of 1.275 masterwork arrows if they cost 6,05 gp to make... :weep:

I personally would rule that a unit of arrows (20) costs 1 gp. Therefore MWK arrows would cost 7 gp (not sure why you'd want MWK ammo in first place since ranged weapons bestow their enchantment on the ammo in the first place).

First of all, it's enhancement; secondly, up to 3.5e that was not the case; finally, arrows of what ever slaying or that are otherwise given special properties other than those granted by the firing weapon require that they are also masterwork and enchanted seperately...

Actually I wasn't really interested in magic arrows, but instead shuriken. If you could make 250 magic shuriken for the price of a regular weapon, it might be worth it.

Also another reason besides what has been state that you might magic up an arrow is that it you could get around the +10 enhancement max on weapons.

+10 on arrow and +10 on bow.

Still love the image of my halfling rogue carrying 1000+ arrows on his tiny little back in Black Isle's games...
