Confused about set item damage [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-12-08, 12:34 PM My friend's 16th level monk has a 16 STR and is using a Scorpion Kama (MIC 201) while wearing an Amulet of Mighty Fists (DMG 246).

Would his damage with the Scorpion Kama be:

2d8+5 (unarmed strike damage + 3 STR bonus damage + 2 Amulet of Mighty Fists enhancement bonus damage (the +1 from the Scorpion Kama won't stack with this))

or

2d8+4 (unarmed strike damage + 3 STR bonus damage + 1 Scorpion Kama enhancement bonus damage)

On that same note, if you have an feat/ability that lets you deal additional damage on an unarmed strike (like the Fiery Fist feat (PHB2 79)), will you deal this damage when attacking with the Scorpion Kama?

02-12-08, 12:44 PM The amulet does extra damage but it says only with Unarmed or natural attack, since it use a weapon it's either natural or unarmed it doesn't count at all.

02-12-08, 12:59 PM The description of the Scorpion Kama says it deals damage equal to your unarmed strike damage or kama damage, whichever is higher.

I realize that it's not a natural weapon or unarmed strike, however, what I'm not sure about is if the Scorpion Kama replaces only the weapon's base damage or can you add the bonus damage for an unarmed strike as well?

I think the special ability of the scorpion kama allows it to do any damaged an unarmed monk would do. That is how I read it anyway so the mighty fist damage should apply.

02-12-08, 05:42 PM The Amulet of Mighty Fists or the Firey Fists feats would not apply to the kama. The kama states that it deals damage equal to the character's unarmed strike damage. That means if your monk is dealing 1d10 unarmed strike damage, the Kama will deal 1d10; the kama replaces its damage value with the base damage value of the character's unarmed strike. Now if you had a feat or magic item that improved your base unarmed strike damage, such as a Monk's Belt or Improved Natural Attack, then the kama's damage would increase by the same value, but effects which add extra damage to unarmed strikes (such as the Magic Fang spell or flaming gauntlets) do not have any effect on the scropion kama.

02-13-08, 03:02 AM The damage is equal the Monk's normal modified damage BASE. Enhancing the natural attacks, adding extra damage, or otherwise changing damage in some way does not affect the item.

The +2 from the amulet has no effect on the Kama, as it is extra damage, applied only to the "natural attack", aka unarmed. Add in strength damage too.
