| userprop04-15-06, 07:27 AM | someone explain this feat to me: -------------------------------- SNATCH [GENERAL] Prerequisite: Size Huge or larger. Benefits: The creature can choose to start a grapple when it hits with a claw or bite attack, as though it had the improved grab special attack. If the creature gets a hold on a creature three or more sizes smaller, it squeezes each round for automatic bite or claw damage. A snatched opponent held in the creature’s mouth is not allowed a Reflex save against the creature’s breath weapon, if it has one. The creature can drop a creature it has snatched as a free action or use a standard action to fling it aside. A flung creature travels 1d6 x 10 feet, and takes 1d6 points of damage per 10 feet traveled. If the creature flings a snatched opponent while flying, the opponent takes this amount or falling damage, whichever is greater. -------------------------------- 1.) what qualifies the victim as "snatched"? 2.) can the snatcher throw something larger than 3 sizes smaller than it? 3.) is the grapple at -20 for being with only 1 appendage? 4.) can the snatcher initiate a grapple normally and still do the automatic damage? snatch is very cinematic, monsters throwing PCs left and right, but how exactly does it work? also, with no prerequisites (other than size) it seems COMPLETLY BROKEN, am i missing something? |

| ShinAkuma204-15-06, 09:02 AM | Confused by snatch he he he :D You know, I thought the same thing. Anyway... 1.) what qualifies the victim as "snatched"? If the monster hits with a claw or bite, then makes a successful grapple check, the thing it's fighting is "snatched." 2.) can the snatcher throw something larger than 3 sizes smaller than it? Yes, it can. The size thing is only for the "constrict"-like effect. 3.) is the grapple at -20 for being with only 1 appendage? Only if you choose to conduct it that way. 4.) can the snatcher initiate a grapple normally and still do the automatic damage? Hm, I'm not really sure on that. I would rule it has to snatch something to do that, but I won't say that's 100% correct. |
| chitzk0i04-15-06, 12:59 PM | also, with no prerequisites (other than size) it seems COMPLETLY BROKEN, am i missing something? I think you don't realize how few PCs get to be Huge-sized. That is a major restriction. Are there even any huge-sized monsters PCs can play? |
| Molitor04-15-06, 01:07 PM | I too am confused by snatch. |
| DM_Greatness04-17-06, 02:11 AM | OMG - I Can't quit laughing! |
| aotrscommander04-17-06, 11:33 AM | 2.) can the snatcher throw something larger than 3 sizes smaller than it? Yes, it can. The size thing is only for the "constrict"-like effect. True, but you can only grab/snatch a creature at least one size smaller than you (so a dragon can'r snatch another dragon). 4.) can the snatcher initiate a grapple normally and still do the automatic damage? Hm, I'm not really sure on that. I would rule it has to snatch something to do that, but I won't say that's 100% correct. I would say, technicly, no, in the same way that a creature with Improved Grab can't utilise it's Improved Grab by starting a grapple normally (i.e. by making an 'unarmed' grapple attempt). That said, thre's no reason that said creature couldn't make it's single natural weapon attack on the target in order to then be in a position snatch/improved grab (and maybe take the -20 to hold the target in one appendage if it likes). You might also rule that a creature can switch from a normal grappling state to a snatch or Improved grab state as it were, by making a grapple check. A side note; you could only deal automatic claw damage (etc) once per round per target you've snatched. snatch is very cinematic, monsters throwing PCs left and right, but how exactly does it work? also, with no prerequisites (other than size) it seems COMPLETLY BROKEN, am i missing something? No, because as has beem said, most PCs aren't Huge. It can't be broken if it's a mainly DM thing, can it? After all, as DM you hold your dice above your head and say 'rattle, rattle, rattle, it's a 20'. (Don't do this too often, or you might have to find some more players...!) But in some ways, it's better than Improved Grab (which you can't throw with and you have to make a grapple check to deal damage). But the again, MOST creature with Improved Grab have some sort of secondary special attack (constrict, swallow whole, rake etc). (The bears in the MM are and exception. After working it all out (see the thread here http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=619021) I came to the onclusion that the bears would be better off with Improved Grapple.) Strictly speaking, too, the MM missed out one prerequiste; you must have a claw or bite attack to use this feat. A rigid interpretation of RAW would suggest you can't use it with any other attacks. But in theory there's no reason you couldn't use it with other natural weapons. |
