I am playing a solitaire adventure from the 80's called Thunderdelve Mountain.
I am getting my feet wet trying to get back into D&D.

I have the 3.5 PHB but this adventure says the following :

"With a roar the giant creature scoops you
up in its crushing grip and throws you at the
door. You land
with a crack. Take 1-4 points of additional
damage. You pick yourself up ON the floor
and throw yourself at Trudy"

What happened is the Ogre rolled a d20 for a critical.
It pointed me to the above section. What does take 1-4 points of additional damage mean? Does it mean 1d4 roll?

Thank you for any help....sorry if this seems confusing.

Yup.

That's exactly how I would interpret it.

Be aware, though... If you're going though a published adventure from the 1980s, using PHB v3.5 as a guidebook is going to give you a headache. Revert to 1st Ed, if you can.

This is solid advice....I have been playing for about an hour and have run into several "questions" so far.

If anyone minds.....This is also listed under the Ogre :

# AT 1
D: 3-8 (1d6+2)
ML :10

What the heck does this mean??

# AT 1
D: 3-8 (1d6+2)
ML :10

Number of Attacks per round: 1
Damage: 3-8 (1d6+2)
Monster Level: 10

I'm not 100% on the last one. It seems rather high.

I am a level 9 Dwarf. The game has you playing between levels 7-9.

So the damage 3-8 would be rolling 3d8's?
Yipes.

Ohhh.....and to refresh my memory.....In the adventure book the high dwarf who sent me on this quest gave me 150gp for accepting the quest.

At that point....should I have bought my gear?
I forgot to do this!! When I went to fight the Ogre I realized I had no weapons!!

3-8 would be d6 +2

Huh? Are you serious? When does an adventurer ever not have his gear? So, you're walking around with no armor, weapon, food, magic items?.... Please tell me you have clothes on.

At 9th level, you should have some pretty significant gear -- which you should equip at all times!

Unless you're a Monk or a caster, the ogre should have killed you without your weapon.

First Edition AD&D just gave you the number range and let you work out/decide how to roll it. So 3-8 is 1D6+2 while some ranges might give you more than one possibility.

Generally any edition is more fun with other people to play with.

Monster descriptions in 1e (and 2e) had a stat called Morale (ML).

It was a number that indicated how likely the monster was to break and run from combat if badly hurt. Some dice were rolled (2d6 or 3d6 iirc) and the monster ran if the result was above the morale score. Details are probably in the 1e DMG.

1e did have a concept of "monster level" and xp earned varied with that (and the number of hp the monster had).

Thank you Merestil. That was killing me!!!

Yes, I tried kicking him in the shin while naked. The Ogre was laughing so hard he fell down. Then the dwarf stomped his head in.

Alright....now I am having trouble here getting my mind wrapped around the concept of combat.

Say I am a level 3 fighter and I encounter an Ogre.
Is it me....or does it seem highly unlikely that one would be able to beat such a creature alone?

Say the Ogre has it's avg 29hp.
My a/c is like 15.
The Ogre gets a +8 attack bonus for swinging a great club.
The Ogre hits me. According to the book the Ogre will do 2d8+7 damage.

If I only have 24hp he could kill me with one swing!!

But even I was using a great axe and I hit him....he would shrug it off.

Am I looking at this correctly?
Would you turn and run if you "bumped" into an Ogre?

You said game is intended for lvl 7-9, so why are you lvl 3?

Ooops.....I was actually changing directions in the thread.
Sorry about that.

I started to get curious about things, thats all.
Still trying to get my feet back under me having not played for soooo long.
I guess I am trying to understand when it would be good to back down from combat if possible.

What happened was the Ogre slaughtered me.
Then I tried the battle again. (I am playing solo...I can do that!)
Same thing.
I am using a dwarven waraxe but everytime the Ogre hits, he deals so much damage my hp drop like a rock.

Are you wearing armor/shield?
Orenmir

1-on-1, the ogre will most likely kill you. Usually, a BBEG that can outmatch you is meant for a party of PCs to take care of. Unfortunately, running isn't really an option since he is faster than you. It's time to get creative. How's your charisma?

It sounds like you have your gear with you this time. Good job.

Yes....running around naked was not a good option! :D

Charisma was 10.

Why....would you try and talk the Ogre out of smashing him?

Oh...and to add to my questions....

Why wouldn't people always use a weapon that does the most damage?

I see people using swords, maces, etc but there are weapons that do d10 and d12 damage. Why wouldn't they always use those?

Because they don't qualify for them.

Because they are trying to overcome DR.

Because they can use 2 of something else.

Because something else has reach.

Because something else is concealable.

Because something else has a better crit range and they have improved critical.

Because something else is flurry-able.

Because something else can be used in a grapple.

Because something else has huge magic properties.

...off the top of my head.

Thank you very much for that explanation.

What do you mean by this though? :

Because they are trying to overcome DR.

Thank you very much for that explanation.

What do you mean by this though? :

If a creature has Damage Reduction 5/slashing, you want to use a slashing weapon (even if it deals slightly less damage than a different weapon).

Don't forget weapons that would be fun to use even if mechanically weaker.
