Constrict vs. DR [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am not sure how Constrict damage should interact with DR. Let's say there's a big lobster fighting a warlock with DR 2/cold iron. The lobster has a claw attack which deals 1d8+6 damage, Improved Grab, and Constrict for 1d8+6.

The lobster makes a claw attack on the warlock and hits, so it does 1d8+6 damage. He then gets a free grapple attempt. If it succeeds it establishes a hold and does another 1d8+6 damage via Constrict. Should the damage from Constrict be added to the damage from the claw for the purposes of overcoming the DR or not? Basically, should the damage be (2d8+12)-2 or (2d8+12)-4?

How about the next round when the lobster makes a grapple check to do claw damage? It will automatically get constrict damage too, and it seems like all the damage comes from one big "squeeze". It seems odd to separate this damage into two separate attacks.

On the other hand, combining the damage might not seem so logical in the case of something like a giant constrictor snake, which bites you with its mouth but then squeezes you with its body.

So, how do you think it should be handled? Do the RAW have anything to say on the matter, or is it basically just up to each group's preference?

I believe it's neither (2d8+12)-2 or (2d8+12)-4, but rather (1d8+6)-2 & (1d8+6)-2. IIRC, the constrict attack is considered its own separate attack, and DR applies separately to each attack. While subtle, there is a difference between (1d8+6)-2 & (1d8+6)-2 and (2d8+12)-4.
