containers ? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-24-06, 11:08 AM I think this can be found in the A&EG (despite it being 3.0, there's no reason these stats can't be carried over). I don't have it with me, but I can look if nobody else has an answer tonight.

However, note that containers are more a measure of volume then weight.

You can hold the same volume of gold as you can wood, but the weight will be VERY different for the two substances.

Are you curious about the breaking weight of the item or just "how much can you carry in it" (e.g., the volume)?

04-24-06, 12:11 PM I think the PHB gives volume, but I'd say the best judge in this case for what it can carry is a judgement call. Ask yourself if a backpack should be able to hold this. If you can't decide, grab one and test it. This is just my opinion though, there probably are weight values somewhere.

I don't have it here, but when I go home for lunch in a few minutes, I'll post the capacities from 2nd edition, which are still fine for use -- a bag is a bag, right? Just remember fifty coins to the pound.

Belt pouch, small 5 lbs. 4"×6"×2"
Chest, large 100 lbs. 3'×2'×2'
Chest, small 40 lbs. 2'×1'×1'
Sack, large 30 lbs. 2'×2'×1'
Sack, small 15 lbs. 1'×1'×8"
Saddle bags, large 30 lbs. 18"×1'×6"
Saddle bags, small 20 lbs. 1'×1'×6"

For reference purposes, the Belt Pouch from the PHB is the small version, and the standard PHB Sack is the large.

04-24-06, 02:19 PM The volumes are the dimensions of the items. A back pack is 3 ft tall, 2 feet wide, and a foot thick. That means it can hold 6 cubic feet of stuff (length x width x height, or in this case, 1 x 2 x 3 = 6)

or a large chest could hold (3 x 2 x 2 = 12) 12 cubic feet

in case you also don't know, 1 cubic foot is a cube with sides 1 foot long

See, there's a big difference between 1x2x6 and "twelve cubic feet". If I have a block cube that's two feet on a side, it's only 8 cubic feet, but it won't fit in that bag -- it's just too wide. By specifying the dimensions, you can get that information.
