Containers in 3.5 [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-14-04, 02:40 PM I was looking at the 3.5 PHB for containers, and I found containers in the Equipment area.

I tried to see how much the containers can hold, it does not exist in the 3.5 PHB. So I had to look in the 3.0 PHB and I found it.

So I see that a barrel can hold 10 cubic feet of mass.

Now to see how much salt weighs, or any of the other barrely type things.

5gp of salt weighs 1 pound.

Okay..so how much salt (which is in pounds) can fit into a barrel (which is in cubic feet)? The barrel isn't limited by weight, and I have no clue how many cubic feet is equal to a pound of salt.

I wish the PHB designed this better for both players and DMs so we don't have to get into serious research just to run a game.

I don't want to have to try to figure out how much mass stuff in powdered form weighs, I don't want to have to figure out how many sticks of cinnamon can fit in a crate.

This is just stupid crap that should have been covered.

10-14-04, 02:59 PM The container rules do exist, but they are not based on cubic feet.

Instead they do it by weight, and those rules are in one of the core 3.5 books.

This is a better way in my opinion: you can always overstuff/ have an item overflow, but if you exceed the weight, the container breaks.

10-14-04, 03:04 PM Well, if they do it by weight in 3.5 then that makes it soooo much easier. But where would I find this information at? :) I couldn't find it in the Equipment or Adventuring area of the PHB..would it be in the DMG? (I don't see why it would be).

Then again, by weight still isn't realistic if you think about it. You could fill a barrel with cotton and have way less weight than if you filled a barrel with salt. I guess you can stuff more and more cotton in the barrel, but unless you have a lid on it, the cotton will come bulging out and falling out of the barrel, and that is not good. :)

10-14-04, 04:27 PM The information is in the actual core books, but not in the SRD. (Like xp costs, certain character names [Mage's Disjuntion....] and leveling up information, WoTC did not make it public.

This is why cotton isn't shipped in barrels. ;)
