(approx.) is true, but 1 cu.ft. = 60 lb. of equipment is a generalization. There could be equipment which is 1 cu. ft. which only ways 1 lb. :) |
| Ssussunriyh09-18-04, 05:06 PM | The weights and volumes listed are maximum capacities for the containers, not fixed values or absolutes. Certainly you could have a backpack or a sack hold less in terms of weight and/or volume, you just can't make it hold more. Let's consider coins, for example. According to the Player’s Handbook, a standard coin weighs about one-third of an ounce, or fifty to the pound. This figure apparently doesn’t change whether the coin is composed of copper, silver, gold, or platinum. Science majors may howl in protest over this, but for simplicity’s sake let’s take it as given. (And who says we’re dealing with pure metals here? Even with the skill of dwarves and the use of magic, the prevailing level of technology is equivalent to Europe during the Midde Ages. It’s unlikely that the smelting and refining techniques available could produce a degree of purity that would make such a distinction necessary. Besides, D&D is a fantasy game. If you enjoy debating the laws of physics, maybe a science-fiction RPG would be more to your liking…) The standard coin is shown at actual size in the PHB, as well. It is about one-and-three-sixteenths of an inch (1.1875”) in diameter. Thickness is not given, but let’s assume that it is at least as thick as a modern-day US quarter. Actually, the thickest coin I have in my pocket is a nickel, measuring about .075” on a micrometer. From these figures, we can calculate that a coin has a volume of .083 cubic inches. One cubic inch of solid metal would contain the equivalent of 11.2 minted coins. But since coins are round, not square, there is a significant amount of leftover space in between them, even when neatly stacked. Comparing the volume of a standard coin to that of a theoretical square “coin” with the same width and thickness (.106 c.i.), we conclude that coins will take up 78.5% of the available space when stacked. Fudging things a bit, let’s assume that the figure is around 65% for coins just dumped in any old which way. This translates to an average of 8.5 coins per cubic inch when stacked, or 7 per cubic inch when piled loose. (All figures have been rounded down, since you can’t compress a load of coins like you can stuff more clothing into a suitcase.) (NOTE: For metric users, a coin’s diameter would be 31mm and its thickness would be 1.9mm. The rest is left as an exercise to the student, since the would-be teacher is a stubborn, lazy American…) A backpack has a volume of 1 cubic foot, which equals 1728 cubic inches, so in theory it could hold over 12,000 coins, which would weigh about 240 pounds. (We’ll only consider loose coinage - who would bother to stack it all?) But what would happen if you filled it with 240 pounds worth of coins and then tried to pick it up? The straps would come off, it would burst apart at the seams, and you’d probably give yourself a hernia! So the more important questions are: how much can you safely put into such a container without destroying it, or carry in it without straining yourself? The charts give the official figures. |
