| ManinBlaq10-26-05, 01:11 AM | With the recent faq/sage ruling of the monk's unarmed strike stacking with the INA feat .. it got me thinking .. has anyone tried going to the other extreme? Namely, that the monk's unarmed strike is treated as a 'manufactured' weapon -- for all spells and effects. So can a caster with 'Craft Magic Arms and Armor' simply lay a +3 enhancement bonus directly on the monk? Be kinda interesting... |
| nnnnn10-26-05, 01:14 AM | Well, you can use spells and psi powers that enhance weapons. Maybe coupled with a "permanency" spell, that could be interesting. But I don't know about enchanting. I don't think that would work because of the materials reqs etc. nnnnn |
| ManinBlaq10-26-05, 01:25 AM | Well .. permancy was always on the table. The only problem would be that the rules for purchasing spells to be cast, indicate that it would be 'unavailable'. Looking at the 'Craft Magic Arms and Armor' -- the only caveat I see is: "Is a monk's unarmed strike considered masterwork?" What about 4th level, when the monk receives Ki Strike (magic). If the monk's unarmed strike is considered a magic weapon - and all magic weapons are of masterwork quality, then doesn't that suggest that a monk's unarmed strike is masterwork? |
| Tyler Do'Urden10-26-05, 01:43 AM | the only caveat I see is: "Is a monk's unarmed strike considered masterwork?" Mine is. Magic fang and permanency. Finding qualified mages to boost the monk's fighting potential is just as valid a reason to go adventuring as finding a holy avenger for the paladin. As far as enchanting a monks hands/feat/forehead(s) as magic weapons, that's really something only a DM should handle. It's another one of those "Well, the rules don't say you can't but... c'mon." You could actually have a lot of fun with allowing it. At one day per 1,000 gp, it'd be like getting weeks and weeks of arcane surgery at higher levels. Play with it; make it more expensive because only 11th level monks and up are masterwork; make it harmful and require Fortitude saves from the monk to avoid losing his weapons entirely; make it a grueling ritual that requires him to do nothing but fast and meditate for the duration of the procedure; you could come up with all sorts of exciting and innovative ways to screw with the P- er, um... advance the, uh, plot. Yeah. If all you did was price it like the amulet of mighty fists it'd probably be balanced. In my experience, a character is just as likely to lose a worn magic item as he is to lose a limb. |

Losing a limb - without getting killed altogether - has happened twice to a character since as long as I can remember, but getting robbed, taken prisoner, shaken down or forced to sell items seems to happen (or at least seems to be a distinct possibility) every other week. |
| vardock10-26-05, 11:43 AM | if a monk's unarmed strike is considered a manufactured weapon for all spells and effects, if he/she HITS someone who took a vow of peace, he must make a fortitude save or his fist will shatter into a million pieces :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! Also you may want to take levels in Kensai (complete warrior) with this class you could add an enhansment bonus as well as magical abalites such as holy or flame burst to your fists and you could still advance as a monk afterwards |

And yes the Kensai has always been a viable option for the monk. |
| tiluvias9910-26-05, 09:15 PM | So can a caster with 'Craft Magic Arms and Armor' simply lay a +3 enhancement bonus directly on the monk?I think you'd have trouble finding a masterwork monk. |
| jaelis10-26-05, 09:24 PM | Well, they don't call it Craft Magic Arms for nothing :) |
| ManinBlaq10-26-05, 11:06 PM | Good point Jaelis... I can't wait to get my monk +3 magic arms. |
| Waterhammer10-27-05, 12:23 AM | Where did the General keep his armies?.....In his sleevies...sorry,I better log off now.... |
| Tyler Do'Urden10-27-05, 04:41 AM | if a monk's unarmed strike is considered a manufactured weapon for all spells and effects, if he/she his someone who took a vow of peace, he must make a fortitude save or his fist will shatter into a million pieces Mnk: "Doc, my fist explodes when I do this." Doc: "Well, don't do that." I think you'd have trouble finding a masterwork monk. Wasn't that that Chow Yun-Fat/Sean William Scott kung-fu magic movie? The hot chick was in it. She spoke Chinese and kicked Sean's ass. And finally: Monk/Sorc: "So my finger of death gets a +3 to the DC, right?" DungeonMaster: "What? Where the hell are you getting a +3 from?" Monk/Sorc: "Well I cast it with a +3 finger." :D DungeonMaster: "...do I need to bring out the awakened gazebo again?" WholeParty: "Dear God, No!" |
| vardock10-27-05, 11:26 AM | Yea ... so don't ..uhh.. take that vow of peace then. And yes the Kensai has always been a viable option for the monk. that was a typo It is HITS someone with Vow of peace. but after further reading i found that treating it as a manufactured weapon applies only to Enhansment |

So, Fort save or... disintegrate. *gulp* |
| Barloch10-27-05, 03:55 PM | Hmm I think directly enchancting a monks body with magic for enhancing weapons is a viable option. Lord knows they need the space (well at least I do) for magic items and the amulet of mighty fists isn't worth its price no matter what plane of existance your on, unless they just rain from the sky every now and then I wouldn't pick one up. I personally would say yes you could do it, but I don't think according to that silly old RAW you can, but then again as mentioned earlier a monk treats his fists as manufactured weapons, and at 4th level magic and according to the RAW all magic weapons are masterwork so that would allow you to imbue your whatever with magic for the beatdownness. And then you can pick up that flying quality from OA and fly around like superman! That'd be hilarious!!!!! |
| Nephlite10-27-05, 04:47 PM | that was a typo It is HITS someone with Vow of peace. but after further reading i found that treating it as a manufactured weapon applies only to Enhansment Yeah, only when beneficial (improves or enhances it). The problem with the amulet is it is the wriong slot: Bracers or Guantlets are combat function(unlike Amulet which doesn't so +50% cost) and would reduce price by 1/3rd. (A number multiplied by 1.5 needs to be divided by 1/3 to get back real price) |
