An 8-quart dutch oven will run about 21 pounds. http://www.rei.com/product/714247 http://www.rei.com/product/714250 You'll also need a wooden spoon (about 0.1 lb.), a chef's knife (8-10" blade, under 1 lb.), a 3-4" utility knife (maybe 0.4 lb.), a mixing bowl or two, a steel whisk, and some measuring cups and spoons. A good cutting board really helps, preferably end cut. Essential ingredients include coarse salt, pepper, and a few herbs and spices. Remember that part of the attraction of pepper was that it helped cover the smell and taste of rancid meat. :P
