I am going to accost my PCs soon with some underwater encounters and one thing I had wanted to equip my assailants with was weapons magically made out of coral. Thing is, I don't know much about coral other then it burns like hell and most doctors suggest an immediate tetanus immunisation. Thought i'd give it a try, i'm aiming for some level of realism with a little far-flung fantasy included.

For an example coral property I was consider;

All open, bleeding wounds inflicted on creatures with a coral weapon cause a DC 13 Fortitude save for every wound inflicted by a coral weapon; if they fail it they take 1 bleed damage per round till healed. A DC 13 Heal check must be made on an injured creature to remove the fragments of coral lodged in the wound before any healing or further treatment ( magical or otherwise ) can be done. If not treated, after 1d20+1 days the creature in question has a 20% chance of becoming afflicted with Tetanus and must make a percentile roll every day till cured. Creatures that do not bleed, or do not have discernable anatomies are not effected by this.

This is another idea of mine;

All open, bleeding wounds inflicted on creatures with a coral weapon cause a DC 13 Fortitude save for every wound inflicted by a coral weapon; if they fail it they take a -1 penalty on all attack rolls and Dexterity-based rolls till treated with a Heal check ( this penalty is not cumulative ).

Armor and Weapons can be forged from Coral at triple their normal price due to rarity ( normal price if the materials are supplied ). All equipment made from coral has 40 Hitpoints per inch of thickness and 2 hardness.

Just fishing for some opinions. :)

Well, coral is extremely fragile once it has dried out, so it probably doesn't make very good weapons. In fact, I used to play a lot with coral when I was young. On the island where I lived, it washed up on the shores, in which case it just resembles ordinary stone in peculiar shapes. So you're looking for a specific kind of coral.

As for rules... no need to go extremely complex. If you want to incorporate coral weapons into your campaign or place a special coral as treasure, to be used for the creation of items, then try something like the following.

Coral: A coral weapon costs 2000 gold more to create, due to additional enchantments needed to harden the material for use in weapons. However, because of the vicious nature of this species of coral, incorporating it into a weapon contributes 5000 gold towards the creation of a Vicious or Wounding weapon, due to the fact that the necessary spells are more easily placed into the material (the base price for the creation of the item decreases by this amount, for purposes of creation cost and crafting duration).

(so in the end, if you create a Vicious or Wounding weapon from it, it will cost 3000 gold less than it normally would)

If you have the Arms & Equipment Guide, I believe it covers coral as one of the special materials for armor/weapons.

I second this suggestion. Simple yet flavorful.

just to add to the flavor of the coral.
create a few spells that cause it to grow rapidly in a desired shape (like stone shape) except it can bind and encircle others or creat cage-like structures
just to torment your players ;)
