Full plate comes with padded armor included to be worn underneath so as a dwarf I am planing to wear at night my earthsilk jersey and the padded armor giving AC16 (shield, dex +2 & dodge). But searching for that extra bit of AC without the money at 3rd lvl to get mithril or elven darkleaf I came upon Cord armour in the arms and equipment guide "Fibers of hemp or other natural material woven and knotted into a thick , tough fabric are the basis for cord" From the description this could be worn under full plate nstead of padded for that extra 1AC.What do you think? Ultimately it will be up to my DM to decide. |

There is a type of padding you can have installed in your armor for 500gp in either Dungeonscape or Cityscape, and the Magic Item Compendium has an Armor Crystal that does the same thing for 500gp, but it isn't attached to the armor permanently. Cord Armor is total garbage really, it is for use only if your civilization has not advanced beyond it. Based on the Cord Armor in the AaEG, just a simple Leather Armor is 5gp cheaper, has a 1 higher max dex bonus, and a 0 armor check penalty. The only downside is it has a 5% higher arcane spell failure rate, but that is likely not a concern for you. Any kind of Light Armor can be slept in with no penalties, don't overlook the other kinds. There isn't a penalty for sleeping in armor for certain check penalties, it is purely a matter of the armor category of Light, Medium or Heavy. Strictly speaking, in D&D you don't wear armor in layers. If your DM says you can just take off full plate and still be wearing padding that seems nice, but isn't by the book. If you have to change your outfit anyway, just go with leather (studded leather, or chain shirt). Also, since you are a Fighter, always try to be awake at least for one watch (even though you aren't the best person to be on watch, you don't need to sleep to prepare spells and it probably wouldn't hurt to keep another guy company). There are actually several ways to get into armor pretty quick, but usually they depend on expensive magic. Restful Crystal from MIC is probably your best bet (you can simply switch the crystals with a couple of Move actions anyway), and eliminates all these headaches. If the crystal isn't available, I would stick with a second suit of light armor for sleeping rather than get the special padding, because you will probably be trading up eventually. |
