| CelestialBarbarian02-20-07, 03:49 AM | The PHB says that large armor for humanoid-shaped creatures has double the price for the same type of medium-sized (humanoid) armor. With large masterwork armro, does the doubling apply only to the base cost or to the masterwork component of the cost as well? Thanks. :) |
| Thomar_of_Uointer02-20-07, 03:56 AM | This cost is the same for a Small or Medium version of the weapon. A Large version costs twice the listed price. You can’t add the masterwork quality to a weapon after it is created; it must be crafted as a masterwork weapon (see the Craft skill). The masterwork quality adds 300 gp to the cost of a normal weapon (or 6 gp to the cost of a single unit of ammunition). Adding the masterwork quality to a double weapon costs twice the normal increase (+600 gp). Oooh, interesting wording. Looks like they conflict. I'd say that the masterwork quality is not modified, it's a flat number just like weapon enhancements. |
| Thomas_Covenant02-20-07, 03:56 AM | Nope. Masterwork modifier doesn't multiply...lemme look for the relevant passage... EDIT: Here we go...Armor for Unusual Creatures: The cost of armor for nonhumanoid creatures, as well as for creatures who are neither Small nor Medium, varies. The cost of the masterwork quality and any magical enhancement remains the same. Weapons for Unusually Sized Creatures: The cost of weapons for creatures who are neither Small nor Medium varies. The cost of the masterwork quality and any magical enhancement remains the same.Err...no, Thomar. The cost increasing for being a double weapon and for being non-standard size are separate issues. For masterwork and and enhancement purposes, a double weapon is treated as two weapons for cost calculations, but that doesn't apply to the OP's question. |
| runestar02-20-07, 03:59 AM | You double the base cost of the weapon, then add +300gp for making it masterwork. A halfling does not get a discount on his masterwork short sword, does he?;) |

I haven't been doubling the masterwork modifier but it occured to me that I didn't know if I was doing it right or not. I looked but didn't see anything that could answer the question. A literal reading for armor would go the other way I suppose, as the Armor for Unusual Creatures sidebar just says to apply the multiplier to cost for the armor type in question. Masterwork full plate would cost 1650 and doubling that would get you 3300. For weapons a literal could go the other way, as it says to double the "listed price." Since the masterwork price isn't listed, a doubling wouldn't double it if we followed the exact words. I doubt they intended, however to treat armor one way and weapons another way. |

A halfling does not get a discount on his masterwork short sword, does he?;) Well I think the typical DM mindset is to "pimp out" the player, as we used to say back in the late 70s. :D In fact as I recall, in the 1st Ed DMG Gygax actually says things like "doors are always stuck or locked for PCs, but always open freely for monsters." So while a DM probably wouldn't be inclined to give the halfling a discount, he might well be inclined to charge the centaur a premium. :P |
