the boots of striding and spring are relativley cheep at 4000 if you just had striding ie. x2 base speed what would it cost and what about x4 or x6 or x10!!? I suppose what I am looking for is a formula for the striding ability speed increase anyone know where it can be found or could figure one out?

First off, striding is, as of edition 3.5, only a flat +10 enhancement bonus to speed. And there are no guidelines for speed increases past the +10. It costs 3,000 gold, though.

sorry still getting used to the 3.0 to 3.5 change over but still what do you think would be a good equation for that?

He told you. 3,000 gold. Boots of S&S are 5,500, a competence bonus to a skill costs the bonus squared multiplied by 100 gp (5*5*100=2,500 for +5 competence to Jump), so that leaves 3,000. There are actually rules that affect pricing for items that give multiple advantages and they're not taken into account here, but it's probably close enough. The boots are actually too cheap to begin with if you ask me (the extra speed gives you a +4 to Jump already) so it wouldn't do to cut the price down even further.

hmm I'd suggest a bonus squared type forumula based on 5' increments. So if the item gives a +5' bonus that would be 1 increment, +10 would be 2, etc
2000gp as the multipier seems appropiate, and then just say boots of S&S just got a synergy discount. So for a straight 5' bonus that'd be 2000, for 10' it'd be 8000, 15' would be 18000, 20' for 32000...
that seems to be fairly close to balanced, perhaps a bit cheap. I'm sure someone else will come along and rip it apart :D

It's be closer to the boots to use 1000gp as the multiplier - it would also mirror armour and resistance bonuses, then.

I think the Boots of Striding and Springing price is calculated as follows:

+5 jump: 5^2 * 100 = 2,500 gp (Skill bonus, competence)
Longstrider: 1 * 1 * 2,000 = 2,000 gp (Use-activated or continuous spell effect for spell with duration in hours)
Total cost is 2,500 + 2,000 * 1.5 (Multiple different abilities) = 5,500

Thus making Boots of Striding valued at 2,000 gp. If you want to create Boots of Greater Striding you could use Expeditious Retreat.

Expeditious Retreat: 1 * 1 * 2,000 * 4 = 8,000 gp (Use-activated or continuous spell effect for spell with duration in minutes)

Both items sound a little cheap to me (makes me want to add one to my slippers of spider climb :)). But frankly, Boots of Speed are just 12,000 gp, and 10 rounds/day will last you an encounter or two, with the bonus of an additional attack.

No. Come on, people. The formula guidelines are not supposed to be thrown around and used everywhere. 8,000 gold is way to cheap for an additional 30' of movement. Movement is so useful, more so for certain builds, such as a spring attack fighter or dervish. And in the case of the latter . . .

I would suggest not using any boots at all that give a greater bonus than +10. If the game designers had meant for there to be a greater speed bonus (quite a common thing), I imagine they would have added it.

But since you are likely looking for power, and won't listen, at least make the boots around twenty to twenty five thousand gold.

Hmm.

Using the two examples of cost given here, with +10 enhancement to speed costing 2,000gp and +30 costing 8,000 gives us a formula for calculating the cost of speed boosters.

Cost = 2 ^ (Speed increase / 10) * 1,000.

Thus the cost for +20' boots would be 4,000gp. For +40', 16,000gp. For +50', 32,000gp.

The increase to speed is an enhancement bonus, so it will not stack with other enhancements. It also applies to the base land speed, and load / armour encumbrance will reduce that by one third (round down).

These numbers can be fiddled with. It is also entirely reasonable to suggest that to create an item of fast movement, the creator's landspeed has to be at least equal to the desired enhancement.

The price can be played with further to taste.

Check out boots of swiftness in the EHB, i believe its 265,000 gp for +6 dex, 30 move speed, +20 jump, balance, tumble, and climb, haste 3/day for 20 rounds.

Now that's 3.0, and gives too much stuff for its price, but something has been made that gave that much to movement speed.

There was an article recently on the boards which discussed pricing for boots greater than 10'. IIRC, the pricing system they came up with worked out pretty well balance wise.

Where are you getting that the Boots of Swiftness gave +30 movement? I just checked the SRD that I use, and it says double movement, which is a carryover from 3.0. Didn't the +10 movement speed replace doubled movement in 3.5?

The boots were not revised in the Epic Level Update.
