How much should cost a magic item that grants a +4 bonus to grapple attacks? There are no items that grant bonuses to only grapple or only trip attacks. However, you will likely not need such an item (and your DM would be a fool to allow such rampant optimization except in a power game), since both grapple and trip attacks use touch AC. That's touch AC. AC without their armor, shield, and, more importantly, their natural armor bonuses. Natural armor is often all that tougher monsters have. For example, my fighter, who specializes in tripping and avoiding getting hit, usually uses his combat expertise feat to shift five points of BAB to armor class. He only misses most monsters with a trip attack on a 2. Last session, I hit about six times when I rolled a two, even while combat expertising for five. But I digress. If you are trying to up your attack, there are several ways to do it. Amulets of Mighty Fists or enhancement bonuses on your weapon of choice boost unarmed and normal attacks, respectively, and the pale green Ioun Stone grants a +1 competence bonus on several things, including attacks. Note, however, that most items grant bonuses only to attacks, not to the strength check during a trip attempt, nor to the actual grapple check made to win a grapple. These are the checks that you will find difficult, not the attack rolls to attempt the grapple/trip. There are several official ways that I know of to increase either of these modifiers. There are several items (I believe) that allow you to treat your own size as one size category larger whenever it would be beneficial for you (for trip/grapple attempts, for instance), although I am unsure as to where these might be found (some splatbook, and likely third party material). There actually is an item to help your grapple checks, though, if your DM allows it—the Gloves of Titan's Grip (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/items/universalItems.htm#glovesofTitansGrip). Gloves of Titan’s Grip While wearing these oversize gloves, the user gains a +8 enhancement bonus on grapple checks. The power is activated when the user enters a grapple. The enhancement bonus lasts for a maximum of 7 rounds per use, up to three uses per day. Moderate psychometabolism; ML 9th; Craft Universal Item, grip of iron; Price 14,000 gp. |
