| davypi06-09-06, 12:37 AM | I have a character with an excelle save, a good save, and really bad save. I would like to fix that bad save, but spending a few grand on a cloak of resistance seems like a waste. I have to boost all three saves instead of just the one I'm worried about. Is there a magic item somewhere that allows you to boost a single save at a discount? If not, what might be a fair cost for such an item? (500 x plus^2 instead of 1000 x plus^2 would be my vote.) Would such an item unbalance game mechanics? Davy |
| Rolof06-09-06, 01:54 AM | Er...well, what's the save in question? There's the ring of evasion if you've a bad reflex save...it won't actually better the save, just the outcome of a failed one. There's always stat-boosting items, which have multiple payoffs anyway, increase in that stat with all the benefits, plus a small plus to the save in question. There's also a couple feats around that let you switch up what stat you use to save with under certain circumstances. How nice is your DM? You could always ask to see if they'll let you come up with magical item equivalents to buy...like a ring of fortitude instead of a ring of evasion, something of that nature. As long as you use the same price as the base item from the book, I don't see any real reason they would not let you do it. If none of that helps....good luck. |
| Nom06-09-06, 10:52 AM | The generally accepted rule of thumb is that a bonus to 1 save is worth 1/2 of a bonus to all 3. As always, it's ultimately up to your DM though. |
| DaneDarkblade06-09-06, 01:50 PM | Get yourself a wizard willing to make you a wonerus item. Cost of a resist bonus to saves is the bonus squarsed multiplyed by 1000 now to afect only one save that is a conditional restriction and would reduce the cost by 50% Personaly I would spend the full amount and get bonus to all saves. You will regret it when you fail that great save by 1.(always fail by one at worst possible time) |

There's the ring of evasion if you've a bad reflex save...it won't actually better the save, just the outcome of a failed one. Nitpick. Evasion does nothing for a failed save. It modifies the result of a successful save. You're thinking of Improved Evasion, and that's a class feature of a very few classes. |
| Rolof06-09-06, 07:52 PM | Oops...good catch, Merestil Haye. |
| Nephlite06-09-06, 08:20 PM | According to this article: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sg/20060602a A final point on saving throws -- what should it cost to have an item that improves only one of your saving throw categories? For a wizard, an item to boost Fortitude saving throws might be highly desirable, while a barbarian might want to boost Will to avoid getting charmed or confused and turned against the party. Again, there are spells that grant benefits to only one type of saving throw (e.g., bless to Will saves), so there's precedent in the system for it. But how much cheaper should it be than an item that boosts all saves? A good rule of thumb could be that a single-save booster should cost half as much as an item that boosts all saves. So it costs 50% less to boost one save instead of all. So based on Cloak of resistance: +1 resistance bonus to 1 save is 500gp. +2 resistance bonus to 1 save is 2,000gp. +3 resistance bonus to 1 save is 4,500gp. +4 resistance bonus to 1 save is 8,00gp. +5 resistance bonus to 1 save is 12,250gp. |

You will regret it when you fail that great save by 1.(always fail by one at worst possible time) Well, for perspective. My Reflex save is 20 and I'll improved evasion in a level or two. My Will is 10, but I also have slippery mind which gives me a re-roll on the next round. My Fortitude save is 4. So I'm really not terribly worried about the Reflex or the Will because even missing by one is not so bad. However, that Fortitude save is just plain no good. However, after looking at the cost benefit, a +6 Fort bonus costs 18000 while a +4 to all is only 16000. I can't really say its a good deal unless I could get two lower plus items that would stack (which they wont). Even if the cost was 400 per plus instead of 500, the cost differential hardly makes it worthwhile. Oh well. Thanks to all who replied. Davy |
| Artector06-09-06, 10:56 PM | Just like to say that there is the Vest of Resistance in Complete Arcane that gives +1 or more to all saves. |
| Wonton200606-09-06, 11:03 PM | Out of curioustity, what level of rogue are you? |
| davypi06-10-06, 12:25 AM | Just like to say that there is the Vest of Resistance in Complete Arcane that gives +1 or more to all saves. Same cost though. What magic item cloting slot does this take though? The obvious advantage is that you can't have an Elven Cloak and a Clock of Protection, but I would assume that a vest uses the same slot as your armor. Davy |
| Dheran06-10-06, 03:13 AM | I would assume that a vest uses the same slot as your armor. No, that's wrong. It's in the "vest, vestment, or shirt" slot. You're thinking of robes, which use the same slot as armor. |

You could consider using a feat or Special Ability chosen as a bonus feat and take Great Fortitude. |
