Cost to create a "+x to skill" item? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm trying to generate a never-fails-UMD-checks artificer, but I couldn't locate an item that granted a bonus to UMD checks. (Admittedly, I didn't really scour my collection or anything.)

I note that the cloak of elvenkind and matching boots provide a +5 competence bonus to a single skill and go for 2,500gp each. Can I assume that's the standard pricing for any given item that grants a +5 competence bonus to one skill? What about an item that grants a different kind of bonus, such as insight or (Gods help me) unnamed; would the item be substantially different in price?

The DMG lists the price for a +x competence bonus item at (x^2)*100 gp. Which is followed in the vast majority of cases.

That said, the circlet of persuasion will grant a competence bonus on UMD checks.

A different type of bonus to skills has no standard I'm aware of. The only example of such a bonus to a specific skill I'm aware of is the enhancement bonus the amulet of the silver tongue grants to Truespeak checks in Tome of Magic.

::winces:: Of course there's a rule for that in an obvious place that I didn't think to look! Thanks for pointing that out.

She's wearing a circlet of persuasion modified to add a +2 Charisma (via the Magic Item Compendium rules) now; I just wondered if there was an easier way or something I was missing.
