| mistril12-12-05, 02:13 PM | I can't figure out how much more it would cost to inflate the caster level for a magic weapon. If I were going to make a +5 weapon, but I wanted the Caster level to be 20 instead of 15 (has to be a minimum of 3 x enhancment bonus), how much more would it cost, and how did you figure it out? |
| Black Mantha12-12-05, 03:07 PM | The most obvious awnser would be to follow the rules of other magical items with a variable CL, and increase the price by a third. (divide by 15, multiply by 20) |
| Iver Gearsham12-12-05, 07:07 PM | the cl on an item is the minimum (usualy) needed to make it. To bump that up just when figuring the creation costs from the DMG tables Use your level if higher than that as you want Multiplied by spell level and so on to figure the costs. For wands, scrolls, so forth you get higher # damage dice as well. |
| mistril12-12-05, 08:56 PM | Ok, somehow I never seem to articulate myself well enough to get the answer I want. Sorry, let me be more specific. I understand that CL is a factor in price determination. However, I can't figure out the table on how to determine magic item creation costs found in the "basics and creation" chapter of the SRD (Table: Summary of Magic Item Creation Costs). I don't see CL anywhere for weapons. I just don't get it, how is CL even factored in? Can someone walk me through the calculation, because apparently I'm just really stupid? ;_; |
| Nom12-12-05, 10:31 PM | For weapons, minimum CL is (actual) enhancement * 3 or the minimum CL required by any special abilities, whichever is higher. The former is specified in the general magic weapons text (not the overall guidelines), the latter by the normal rules for pre-reqs. For example, a +2 sword of speed would normally have CL 6, +2 requires CL 6, while speed only requires haste (min CL 5). |
| spectralphoenix12-12-05, 10:46 PM | That sounds right. However, why would you want to? I can't think of anything off the top of my head that is affected by the CL of a magic weapon. Even if there was, I doubt it would be worth 16k. |
| mistril12-13-05, 12:47 PM | Why do I want to do it? Saving throws. Most of the time it'll get my saving throws, but if I'm stunned like I was on our last gaming session and drop everything I'm holding, ooh, now there's a 128,000 gp weapon lying on the ground with only a +9 to it's saving throw! (We're 19th lvl chars, so we have a lot of moeny invested in our equipment) Granted it has decent hardness and hit points, but still. I'm paranoid. heh. Blame it on one too many sadistic dm's. ~_^ Anyway, I'm still not even sure it is worth the price, but I want to actually find out what the price is so i can decide if I want to do it or not. No one's answered my question yet. ;_; |
| Nom12-13-05, 08:48 PM | No one's answered my question yet. ;_;Yes they did. Black Mantha gave you a simple formula - which is what I'd use too, BTW, while I detailed how you calculate CL for mixed items. If you want higher than minimum CL, scale the price accordingly. The discussions of CL on DMG pg 287 or so (just before the explicit rules for wands / staves / potions / ...) also support this idea. |
| mistril12-14-05, 06:25 PM | Ah, ok. I apologize, that does make more sense now. My DMG was unavailable so I was going off the SRD. Which was making things harder for me. heh, sorry. |
