Scary, I know. The situation is this: One of the other players already has a helm of comprehend languages and a gem of brilliance. We're in town right now and have access to shopping and various services, and he wants to have the gem mounted on the front of his helm, a-la spelunker's headlamp. The helm obviously takes up a helmet/hat slot; the gem appears to be slotless. So, what would be the closest-to-RaW price for getting this type of work done? Is it just a matter of getting a jeweller to do a little mundane soldering, or are we looking at getting into some more heavy calculations using the magic item pricing guidelines (ie. price for a single combined item using modifiers for adding new abilities to a standard item, putting the gem part into a different slot, all minus the cost of the original helm + gem - or something along those lines)? We're not 100% sure whether you'd normally have to be holding the gem while it is active either. If so, it would make sense if he had to pay extra to have that hand free, but if not, maybe it's just a matter of maybe a couple of hours' use of a Craft skill or a drop of sovereign glue... Opinions? This doesn't necessarily seem to be covered by the rules, at least without extrapolating some of them a little, but that seems a pretty poor reason to just rule it impossible. Thanks, Kang |

Just pay a jeweler a small amount of cash to make the setting. Now, if the gem was slotted, it would be a different story (probably easier to just pay to make the gem slottless than to do any other calculation). |
