How does a coup de grace work? i know it takes a full round action to do one, but does the player have to "study" the target for four rounds before doing the coup de grace?

You don't have to spend any time studying.

No, but it requires the target to be helpless. IE: paralyzed, or completely bound (like for an execution).

Coup de Grace is basically

1: Find big artery

2: Cut artery

The end, full round action.
