| Red_Decker08-26-06, 11:15 PM | Okay First off I have questions about to Weapon Specials. Ki Focus: What does this entail. Is it simply to allow stunning strikes and Ki Strike through a weapon or does it grant the complete package. Stunning Strike, Monk Weapon Status, Ki Strike, Unarmed strike damage. Two: Skillful says it increases your BAB to a minimum of 3/4th BAB. Does this mean someone with 3/4th BAB goes to full BAB? Now a weapon. I'd like someone to help make a weapon, a +5 Ki Focus nunchaku that has a reach of 15' [some type of reach spell I'm thinking] deals 1d10 damage [if Ki focus doesn't increase damage, Greater Mighty Whallop perhaps]. Basically think of Panthro from Thunder cats and make his nunckucks made for a small character. Thanks for the help! http://www.geocities.com/customsmiliesbyswordmaster/inthered.txt |
| Fargren08-26-06, 11:18 PM | Skillfull weapon changes your bonus to 3/4 if that's better than what you have. If it's not, it has no effect. |
| Arkan_Shadesfire08-27-06, 05:08 AM | 1d10 and 15 ft reach for a one handed small weapon? That's really pushing it, especially if you already have a +5 enchantment and ki focus on that thing. This weapon might well be artifact level. That aside, nunchaku are already monk weapons, so it doesn't matter for this one, but as I recall Ki Focus only allows you to use stunning attacks, Ki Strike, and Quivering Palm with them, nothing else. For your weapon, I'd say a modification of the "throwing" ability would work for the stretching thing. Or you could base it on the spiked chain, which if I recall can be use as a reach weapon or can be used to attack an adjacent foe--all you'd have to do is change the discription and the damage type. In fact, throwing might work for the stretching ability--just say that you have to stand in one place while it's using that ability, so you always catch it when it comes back, then just change how you describe it. I don't know if you could pile all that on to one weapon though, as I forget how much Ki focus and throwing cost at the moment. The +5 enhancement should get your maximum damage pretty close to 10 though, so you don't really need to increase the die type. Still, it sounds like you're aiming for somehting that most people would call overpowered. |

I believe I've seen a low level spell that gives reach on weapons and greater mighty whallop does the increase to damage. 3rd level spell IIRC. Personally I'd say +2 for reach +2 for Mighty Whallop effect, making a grand total of +10 weapon. http://www.geocities.com/customsmiliesbyswordmaster/inthered.txt |

Otherwise it does nothing. 3) You need to use a Whip or Whip-Dagger as the basis for your +5 Ki Focus Nunchaku if you want 15' Reach. 1d10 is way off. Whip-Dagger (DU134 p50) 1Hand 1d4 Small 1d6 Medium 19-20 / x2 Slashing 2 lbs Bard, Trip, Disarm +2, Finesse, Shared Proficiency (Whip) Reach 15’ & Threaten Adjacent Attacking generates an Attack of Opportunity Dunno where you get Greater Mighty Whallop? But if it is a spell you intend on increasing the damage, just make it a Large whip and use Monkey Grip. |
| InkBlot08-28-06, 02:55 AM | Ki Focus: The magic weapon serves as a channel for the wielder’s ki, allowing her to use her special ki attacks through the weapon as if they were unarmed attacks. These attacks include the monk’s stunning attack, ki strike, and quivering palm, as well as the Stunning Fist feat. Only melee weapons can have the ki focus ability. Moderate transmutation; CL 8th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, creator must be a monk; Price +1 bonus. These are the only things that work through a ki-focus weapon. Nothing else. Overall, it's a pretty sweet deal. It's the only way (core) to get a single weapon that can overcome DR/adamantine and DR/silver (or cold-iron if you prefer) at the same time. Every monk that uses weapons should have a ki-focus weapon. I just noticed, the ability lists "the monk's stunning attack" as one of the things that work through the weapon. Odd little copy/paste error from 3.0 there. |
| tarkin08-28-06, 10:57 AM | The weapon you are describing sounds epic to me. +5 Ki Focus +1 +2 weapon damage increase from1d6 to 1d10 (more than one size increase). That brings it to +8 Now on top of that you want to go from 5ft reach to 15 AND maintain the ability to attack adjacent creatures? That is going to be at +3, becoming Epic. I could see one with 10ft react + adjacent. If you start it out as a whip dagger, that might work. You give up a lot by doing that. |
| Red_Decker08-31-06, 06:15 PM | Okay. Greater Mighty Whallop [spell from Races of the Dragon] is a 3rd level spell that increases the damage of a blunt weapon a certain number of sizes [maximum of 5] increasing a kobold sized pair of nunchaku to 1d10 would be 3 sizes, making me say a +3 would be about accurate. Then compairing it to the collision ability which adds a flat +5 to damage, this being greater then the average damage for the size increase. Due to the maximum being 1 point higher I'd say it couldn't be higher then +2 because collision would be just plain better. The Extentsion ability. I think +2 would be fine and now my reason. The spell I noted earlier is a second level spell that lasts until the end of the turn. In line with this I'd agree to making the ability have 15' reach only on the characters turn. This way it wouldn't function on AoOs. Another question about Ki Focus, would Firey Fist work with Ki Focus. Also, Dropping from +5 to +4 wouldn't hurt me much. http://www.geocities.com/customsmiliesbyswordmaster/inthered.txt |
| risner09-01-06, 01:43 AM | 1d10 for a small light or one handed weapon is too much. +3 isn't a fair price for a "increase size category 3x" ability. WHere is the Collision ability? Or is this another made up ability by you? Making it 15' reach in any way without taking the restrictions and damage of an existing 15' reach weapon is asking for balance trouble (even with the "no AoO" restriction.) Where is Firey Fist? |
| InkBlot09-01-06, 03:16 AM | Fiery Fist is in PHBII. It will not work with a ki focus weapon. - Unless you ask your DM very nicely. |

Collision is a +2 ability presented in the XPH also in the SRD. This ability adds a flat +5 to damage with a weapon. [Trying to use made up abilities would add no strength to my argument and thus is illogical to assume I made it up.] A third level spell that last for 1 hour/level and increases the size of a bludgeoning weapon by 1 size per three levels requires a 9th level arcane caster to cast, almost enough for all day anyway, so what's the problem making it a +2. This would also be an enhancement bonus so it wouldn't be base damage. As with a ring of evasion, class abilities can be included into an item, this case a weapon and the special ability is Kiss of the Shadows IIRC [Magic of Incarnum]that allows you to use melee weapon with reach per point of essentia. This PrC was designed for monks. Then their is a feat that allows reach as a full rounds action that works with AoO's, also a second level spell functions in the capacity I already mentioned. Three ways to get the ability to a greater or lesser extent depending on the ability. None of them require epic anything. I doubt the reach ability would disrupt much in the way of balance anymore then the rather low level abilities I mentioned would. Whirlwind attack and cleave/great cleave are the worst case scenarios I see with this ability, maybe I'm missing something, I just don't see what problems 15' reach without AoO's would present. Maybe if someone posted something other then "That's too much!!" I might see it Ki Focus: The magic weapon serves as a channel for the wielder’s ki, allowing her to use her special ki attacks through the weapon as if they were unarmed attacks. These attacks include the monk’s stunning attack, ki strike, and quivering palm, as well as the Stunning Fist feat. Only melee weapons can have the ki focus ability. The SRD says as an unarmed strike. Firey Fist is a stunning strike use. Why wouldn't it work. It is a special Ki attack and functions in the same manner as a stunning strike. Please present future arguments with examples of why it's too powerful rather then personal opinion being the reason. Also assume that if I compare one of these abilities to another ability it is an established WotC ability rather then some homebrew work. http://www.geocities.com/customsmiliesbyswordmaster/inthered.txt |

Ok using http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=694416 your weapon is: Exotic Weapon -30% Light Melee Weapon -0% 1d12, 2d6 +28% (medium damage, 1d10 small) 20/x2 +5% Disarm Bonus (per +2) +5% Monk Special Weapon +5% Reach +5% Reach (Inclusive) +5% Extra Specialized Abilities +5% (shared proficiency with nunchaku) ----- Total 128% Otherwise known as 28% too powerful. Just like True Strike shouldn't be priced as a first level spell, any spell that grants reach should not be counted as a cheap enchantment. Reach should only be a feature of the base weapon or be a scroll, wand, staff, caster applied spell with standard duration. So your best bet: 1d4 small Nunchaku +5 enchantment 20 X2 Kata, Monk, Disarm +2 with +2 Collision (+5 dmg, better than your 1d10 ability) +1 Ki Focus (allow you to use Fiery Fists with the weapon) |

The chart you refference shows 1d10 as a +25% not +28%, and gives a margin of about 5%. Furthermore, it seems to me that the suggestion was to give the weapon reach by magical means, and it looks like that chart only applies to base weapon statistics. Give this weapon a couple of drawbacks and I don't see why it would be too unbalancing. |

But reach on a very powerful weapon with no drawbacks currently is way beyond too powerful in my mind. |

You're thinking I mean mundane things that can do what I want instead of magical means to do what I want making the effects enhancement bonuses that can be dispelled or blocked by anti-magic fields and the like. Your little chart doesn't take into account feats, or magical effects otherwise a Bastard sword with keen would probably take the cake with overpowered-ness. Yes, I agree a small/light weapon that does 1d10 base and has reach of 15' would be overpowered and wouldn't have even brought it up. But, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about adding two magical effects that modify the base abilities like any other magical effect, but based on low level spells. Yeah base what I'm asking is broke, but magic, what's the problem? [Sorry about the delay I have limited computer access presently] http://www.geocities.com/customsmiliesbyswordmaster/inthered.txt |
| risner10-04-06, 11:32 PM | Ahh... it's a miscommunication thing. You're thinking I mean mundane things that can do what I want instead of magical No I got a good handle on what you want. No miscommunication. What I am saying is there is no magical balance to giving a weapon 15' reach. You are forgetting the number one rule in magic item creation (read the DMG or the Rules of the Game Item creation posts): Just because there is a spell, doesn't mean you can create an item that duplicates that spell effect, even for any amount of gp. |
