| LukiLoki04-12-05, 04:22 PM | So I've just received a proposed build from a player who wants to play a Swashbuckler/Dervish using yet another new (x)-blade from yet another new splatbook, Races of the Wild: The Courtblade? Wha--? So I'm not allowing it, obviously, till I've read it, but could anybody tell me what is the idea? In general terms, please, as a renumeration of its exact mechanics is a no-no. I'd just like to know, well, really, anything about it, and, if you've used it, what your opinion of it is, and why. Thanks. |
| Vahenir04-12-05, 05:08 PM | Think finessable bastard sword with a better threat range. |
| LukiLoki04-12-05, 05:34 PM | Err-- Yikes. Is there any reason left to use Core weapons anymore? |
| Vahenir04-12-05, 05:35 PM | Not really. Though the Courtblade IS exotic. But for anyone that can afford to burn a feat for an EWP - no, there's no real reason to use core weapons anymore. I mean.. the Elven Thinblade is basically a better longsword. Same damage, better crit. Like I said, anyone that can afford to burn a feat is probably better off doing so and finding one of the many Exotic weapons that are exactly like the weapon they want to use - only better, and using that. |
| Bluebrush04-12-05, 05:39 PM | Actually, it's more a finessable greatsword. d10 18-20/x2 two handed slashing/piercing. Finessable. Stuff like Weapon focus: (greatsword) count for the courtblade too and vice-versa. All in all, pretty good, but not eyes-bug-out broken. |
| Moon-Lancer04-12-05, 05:40 PM | think of it like this, do you allow a spiked chain? i think that is all that needs to be said. |
| Vahenir04-12-05, 06:19 PM | I agree that it's not broken. It's exotic. You have to burn a feat to use it - and that's not an option for many classes - you need your feats. Only the Fighter generally has the free feats to do it without suffering any. And even then - generally a point more average damage or 10% increase in chance of critical hits isn't really worth spending the feat. The only real use many of those weapons have is for the Dex characters to get a decent weapon they can finesse without looking like morons (spiked chain). |
| LukiLoki04-12-05, 06:25 PM | think of it like this, do you allow a spiked chain? i think that is all that needs to be said. Heh. I was actually the first kid on my block to get one. And I agree with you, to a point. But, c'mon. How much better can a long blade attached to a hilt get? What bothers me is that I have an ongoing Campaign and this stuff comes out in a splat book, and now everybody's got to have a flippin' courtblade. When, last week nobody had ever heard of the damned thing. "Ah so, grasshopper. Courtblade. Ancient Elven secret, now yours for $19.99 plus shipping and handling." Of course, I am aware that it is within my power to restrict what sourcebooks are allowed for use by PCs in my campaign, but I try not to be heavy-handed in such rulings, following the adage, "It's a poor DM who blames the rules" |
| Moon-Lancer04-12-05, 10:00 PM | it may be a powerfull sword, but i dont think it pushes any power creep for a exotic weapon prof. Its just really usfull for some classes that normaly wouldent have anything becuse the player is too pridefull to take ewp. But with that said i think your players may be a bit fickle. If all your players are takeing the feat you can make a joke and have all your npc's have them too.... even commoners. They may be doing it becuse the sword really is cool and isent as akward as a spike chain *shutter*. But if you could make commonets with your npc's and reflect there own actions. actualy have them act like they are the new trend. if i was in a campian and all the other players got one too i would be reluctent to get one becuse i like being the odd ball. |
| Ogre4Hire04-12-05, 11:42 PM | It's really not any more powerful than the Bastard Sword, just threaten's a crit 5% more and uses finesse in place of being one handed. Now, the Lynx Paw, on the other hand was something I looked at and said WTF!?! Not only is it broken, it doesn't even appear to have any way to wield it, either. Just how do you stab someone with the rapier end without hitting yourself with the ball? |
| Vahenir04-13-05, 06:00 AM | The same way you wield a Dire Flail, an Orc Double-Axe, or a spiked chain. You don't. |

Just how do you stab someone with the rapier end without hitting yourself with the ball? That's why it's two-handed, though the chain in the picture should be longer. When using the rapier end, you hold the chain up by the ball, so it's not swinging around all over on you. |
