Suppose B moves straight down two spaces and then diagonal to the left. Does B provoke an AoO from M? Or does A provide cover to B, thereby negating an AoO from M?

If no AoO then read on...

Suppose M was colossal (enormous reach) and A and B are medium and the situation is analogous to the one above. Then can B claim cover from A while approaching?

If the monster had greater reach then B would provoke an AoO earlier, though not in that space. A low obstacle can be ignored if the obstacle is closer to the attacker than the target (PH pg 151). As such, B would be out of cover until he is as close to A as the monster is (ie directly behind him), and then would be behind cover until he stepped out again.

00000Uh, how do you figure that, Tark? Reach attacks use the ranged cover rules (PH pg 150). I challenge you to find a corner of 1234 that can trace a path to all 4 corners of B without passing through A (PH pg 150-151).

If M is Large, no, since various allies provide cover.

If M is Huge, then an AoO is provoked when B leaves the first space entered, by the low obstacle rules. Once B is standing directly behind C, he may leave that square without provoking AoO, since he has cover.

If M is Colossal, then an AoO is provoked when leaving the starting space and the first space entered (though M can only take one). Again, he may leave the second space freely due to cover.

02-23-05, 04:56 PM Whoops I made a mistake. Sorry. Happens to the best of us. Never realized you could use your friend to sneak up on a Large Creature without taking an AoO.

But as Nom correctly pointed out, it only works on Large creatures, not on Huge creatures because of the Low obstacle rule.
