06-19-05, 12:23 PM I'm starting a new campaign soon (probably this weekend), and one of my players wants to lassoe (sp?) opponents with ropes. I was wondering if anyone knew of, or had rules for this cowboy manuver.

I've told the player that until I find senible, balanced rules for it, he's not allowed to try.

06-19-05, 12:45 PM An idea that comes to mind in my head is to have him treat it as a kind of grapple.

First he makes a ranged touch attack against his opponent.
Then he resolves the grapple normally. If the opponent is wielding a sword or a knife he can try to cut the rope.

Of course a Lasso is an improvised weapon or an exotic weapon inflicting a -4 penalty to hit. He'll be unable to deal damage with the grapple and to add some vareity I'd make it a 50/50 chance that the rope goes either around the torso(disabling the arms of the target) or around the legs (causing the target to fall prone but otherwise okay.

06-19-05, 01:14 PM I was thinking there should be some sort of entangling effect, then I realized that there already is a weapon that does this: the net.

Questions for anyone whose rodeo fans (or anyone with experience with lassoing things): what sort of range do you have with a lassoe? How much swirling the lassoe about the head is neccissiary and how much is just for show (obviously I'm not a rodeo fan myself); basically, how much set up time do you need to throw a lassoe? Are there any other factors (beyond the normal range, mounted movement, wind, etc. that apply to all ranged attacks) that I'm not considering?

06-19-05, 01:18 PM if you aim for the torso, you get the net effect, if you aim for the legs, its a trip attack that requires them to remove the rope otherwise you can drag him around or tie him up. a shot to the neck is a strangulation attempt, and there are numerous sources for garroting and such in th various books.

look to rules for the Bolas, the Net, garrote, and the Justicar PrC from Complete Warrior (it has rules on Hog-tying! hehe)

06-19-05, 05:35 PM In the Book of Exalted Deeds they have rules on lasso's. the rules presented there in suck and make it nonviable.
The previous posters have way better ideas on how it should be done.

06-20-05, 02:58 AM If anybody can dig up a copy of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons "Dungeoneers' Survival Guide", one of the last hardcover editions of that game, I'm pretty sure that lasso rules were covered in that book, as well as a lesser version of said rules in the Unearthed Arcana of that same series.

I don't have those books anymore. Too many wives.

06-20-05, 05:10 AM From what I can guess in rodeo shows is that the lasso (from a mounted position) Has a very limited range. Somewhere around 20 feet tops.
