The DMG says that orc archers ambushing the character from an upper balcony would have a higher CR than regular orc warriors... What happens if an orc warrior of high enough level to hit the characters, but low enough to e ignored as a threat, finds a keen vorpal blade and attack the characters? In the d20 modern setting, what happens if a kobold finds a rocket launcher? Again in d20 modern, 2 characters of the same level, where one fights with better guns and armor than the first, doesnt that merit higher exp for the underdog? |
| Mort_Q09-28-06, 06:02 PM | I don't understand why CR matters to anyone but the DM? |
| WyldMooN09-28-06, 06:06 PM | Yeah I am the DM, I am trying to adjust the NPC's CR correctly! |
| Xeviat-DM09-28-06, 06:10 PM | Who says the poster isn't a DM? The poster may be saying CR, but they're probably searching for help quantifying the additional threat equipment can pose. I say that if a character's equipment is worth 2 levels less than they should have, reduce their CR by 1. If their equipment is worth 2 levels more than they should have, increase it by 1. I don't know if this should continue to increase or decrease, though. But, a character shouldn't have a single item that is worth more than roughly 50% their equipment value, so take that into consideration. A Keen Vorpal sword is at least a +7 weapon (+1 Keen Vorpal) and will cost at least 98,000 gp, so no one but a 20th level NPC should really have that. So if an 18th level NPC is running around with this, their CR should be increased by 1. |
| Mort_Q09-28-06, 06:19 PM | Yeah I am the DM, I am trying to adjust the NPC's CR correctly! Oops... I need to read more carefully. Who says the poster isn't a DM? Apparently no-one. ;) I read "I know my DM says that you should adjust the CR..." or some such... I was confused. A higher CR means more XP... shut up and take it! Again, sorry. |
| Inigo Carmine09-28-06, 06:22 PM | I know the DMG says that you should adjust the CR (or EL) based on the situation, but does it apply to gears? The DMG says that orc archers ambushing the character from an upper balcony would have a higher CR than regular orc warriors... EL, not CR. The situation never changes the CR of the creatures (or the experience gained...which is based off of individual creatures CR). Situational changes effect the EL, the encounter level. EL is for determining roughly how well your PCs can handle the encounter/ how many encounters they should be able to handle. As for how much more/less wealth effects the EL, I couldn't say. |
| Garonak09-28-06, 06:28 PM | They get the better equipment, it should be reward enough. Inigo is right, don't increase the cr, just the ecl. |
| Qube09-29-06, 03:29 AM | Yeah I am the DM, I am trying to adjust the NPC's CR correctly! well, run the encounter and see how they do. adjust the CR/XP acordinly |
| der_gogo09-29-06, 04:20 AM | Well, I use this system for encounters: - Have a look at the CR of the Monsters that i will send - Calculate an Encounter Lever (EL) for the encounter because of the monsters that are involved - Adjust the EL if the situation is in favor of one of the parties - Reward experience not because of Monster CRs, but EL e.g: Troll attacks party: EL 5 Troll equipped with a ring of fire res attacks party: EL 6-7 Troll balancing on a narrow bridge over lava attacks the party: EL 2-3 :D |
