But, yeah, if you do somehow overcome the encounter through calm emotions, you should get full XP. Again, this is mostly determined by the objective of the encounter. If your objective is to stop the evil cultist before they sacrifice people, and you use the spell just to get the victims out while the cultists are under the effects of the spell, I would say full XP. If, however, your job is to kill the cultists, and you use the spell to run away, I would say less than full to maybe no XP depending on how else the party tried to kill the cultists.

the only requirement for xp is that you defeat the encounter. "killing" just happens to be the preferred method for most players.

11-09-06, 10:50 PM It also depends on how you were supposed to resolve the encounter.
Say you simply need to get from point A to B. How you deal with the impediments in between will not affect the xp you get. Whether you slaughter them, fly/sneak/invis past them whatever, you will still get full xp for bypassing them.

However, if your mission was to kill them, then simply placating them might not award you full xp.:)

What was the circumstances of the encounter?
