Levism84 09-19-04, 10:27 PM	Hey, I have a character that has ranks in craft (novelty item), and I wanted to create a decoder ring. The ring would basically look like a normal nonmagical ring, and would be attuned to two languages (common and another language chosen at creation) and would allow the user of the ring to translate (word by word) from one language into another. However, this would take a long time (not the 250 words a minute comprehend languages allows) and would only allow for exact translation (no insight into sayings or meaning behind the writing). What I would like to know is this: - What is the DC for crafting such an item? - How much would it cost to craft? - How fast (or slow) would someone using it be able to translate? ~Rain~
Ipsissimus 09-20-04, 08:23 AM	Craft novely item sounds more like, making oversized hats, shoes, and trinkets. A decor ring that actually stores an entire language is rather complex to be considered a "novelty" item. Maybe if it was for a small code but an entire language? Hmmmm...the DC should be rather high, definately a MW item since it's a rather small and intricate piece of crafting, and depending on what materials you plan on using would also determine the cost and time spent on crafting it. It's a "novel" idea though...as for time to translate, just sit down and do it yourself and see how long it would take. From a DM's perspective, I would say 8 hours, just like the identify spell to translate several pages of text...you are going letter for letter afterall. Depending on the language would add to the DC of your Decipher script. Ooo, there's another novel idea. It can give you +2 circumstance bonus to Decipher script if it's of the same language. You could always just spend skill points to learn a language you know...but I guess having a decor ring has its cool points in someone's world. "drink more chocolate milk"
