| Green_eyes11-22-06, 12:47 PM | Probably this was discussed more than once. But how would u simulate a lightsaber in DnD. I think the most common approach is that Flame Blade covers that. But there must be some other way. + Adamantine (3000gp) - Lightsaber cuts through anything. + Hideaway(7500gp) - RotW ench, to transform the weapon in a small cylinder. + Continual Flame (110gp) - It burns. What else? Vorpal? Finesse? Speed? Make your call. And what weapon should me enchanced in this manner. |
| crimsonwolf11-22-06, 01:30 PM | probly some version of counterspell or something that reflects ray style magic attacks... |
| Wharin11-22-06, 01:33 PM | I would have suggested Brilliant Energy, seeing how it ignores armor and all, but the problem is theres alot of things that seem to ignore Brilliant Energy as well. |
| Matthew7711-22-06, 01:36 PM | Mighty Sundering for the cutting through walls and doors? |
| Green_eyes11-22-06, 02:33 PM | And Sure Striking to ignore all Good/Bad DR's |
| Rulebook11-22-06, 03:29 PM | this is -really- easy you know... its its own freaking weapon, not an enhanced weapon. it does the following (probably a minor artifact as well) 1d8-2d6 damage depending on how uber you want them touch attacks ignores hardness either untyped or electric/fire damage. how hard is that? |
| Rulebook11-22-06, 03:31 PM | oh and my bad, things like force effects still provide armor. force effects and Force effects i suppose. lol |
| crimsonwolf11-22-06, 03:39 PM | rember lightsabers could bounce back blaster fire ... so ya ray spells idea still |
| Green_eyes11-22-06, 03:55 PM | Come on. Any DM can cough up a Minor Artifact. But be a player and try to craft 1 urself. That is a challenge. crimsonwolf, i'm still thinking on that one. Probably lots of spellbouncing enchants from Faerune. I don't remember the exact name. |
| bawb4411-22-06, 04:23 PM | 2d8 energy damage, reflect as a ref save (dc of attack). Need a spell slot sacrificed per day to power it. Crit is 19-20 x2 |
| TienFong11-22-06, 04:32 PM | Hmm Searing light spell, Also from a divine list kinda gives the force feel.. Entropic shield spell, it allows deflection of arrows, rays, and other forms of range attacks. Maybe use spell focus rod made of adamantine to activate the searing light spell into a blade? |
| Airos11-23-06, 02:20 AM | I would apply the Defending enchantment, since you can use a Lightsaber to deflect attacks. |
| Tempest Stormwind11-23-06, 02:39 AM | *sigh* No love for the wand of Flame Blade (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/flameBlade.htm), perhaps with metamagic applied, and a bit of description? Don't like the wand? Appropriately-modified Flame Blade at will in a hilt. Note that spells already bypass damage reduction. |
| TheDarkLord11-23-06, 02:39 AM | As for a minor Artifact, I don't know. Didn't Luke create one himself? Or did someone else? As far as Damage, I would go d10 for the simple fact it reminds me of a bastard sword. It would be kind of pointless to make this an electricity/fire sword just because so many things are immune or resistant to it. If it penetrated armor (can't remember, been along time since I've seen the series) brilliant energy would be your best bet. As far as deflecting rays, a sword could technically by DnD rules could do that as well. That's represented by feats because it took skill to deflect the rays, not the sword itself. Or you could go a different route and have the sword deal 6d6 points of "Light" damage to any target it hits. It could ignore hardness up to 20. You wouldn't get to add your strength bonus to the weapon because the weapons weight is negligable. The cylinder that holds the "beam" might weigh 1/2lb. |
| Green_eyes11-23-06, 08:49 AM | Ok, I get it. I need a weapon of legacy or a custom "Jedi" class. How do u do that Light damage? |
| Masterfulks11-23-06, 11:54 AM | I'd say it does 2d8, but severs on a critical hit. Hit's on Touch attacks, and is available for weapon finesse. Power attack would not work with it. If you wanted to be more star wars nerdlike you could rule that you needed a Dex of at least 18 to use it in combat. |
| unusualsuspect11-23-06, 02:09 PM | Power Attack would most definitely work with it. As much as it is an energy sword, it is just as solid as anything else when striking with it, and you can just as easily sacrifice accuracy by swinging more wildly but with greater power. That one CAN finesse a lightsaber doesn't mean that brute strength (and techniques based on brute strength, like Power Attack) wouldn't affect it. |
| Jeanette11-23-06, 03:14 PM | Okay, your real problem here is that you want to combine all the wonderful features of the weapon into just the weapon, when what you really need is a specialized class: -Proficient with only the one weapon -its not an actual sword: the "jedi" must craft a psionic "focus item" from which to project his mindblade-like weapon, which does bastard sword damage. -the class gives a small number of PP, usable on powers like Far Hand, Telekinetic Force, and Telekinetic Thrust -Deep Impact as a bonus feat (to resolve the pesky "brilliant energy" problem) -Finally, AC bonus against ranged attacks, and deflecting rays back at the caster, at high levels. Those are my thoughts. A friend and I were discussing it just last week actually... ~the boyfriend |
| CryoSilver11-23-06, 03:23 PM | As a weapon (without the class), I'd start with the basic 1 handed weapon: the longsword. Base = 1d8 19-20/x2 Let's just leave it at that for now. Now the special crap it can do: Deflects lasers: grants Exceptional Deflection (ELH) as a bonus feat when wielded. Cuts through anything: resolves as a touch attack (a la Wraithstrike). Severs limbs: increased threat range; use elven thinblade as the base now (CW). Can be collapsed and hidden: Glove of Storing esque effect. Final Weapon: 1d8 slashing 18-20/x2 exotic (50 gp-ish; see elven thinblade). Grants Exceptional Deflection (feats cost around 10-15 k gp, so 25, because it's an epic feat). Resolves as a touch attack (roughly Brilliant Energy, and I probably overstated the Deflection cost). Add a +1 enhancement and you have a +1 Touch Attacking Elven thinblade that grants Exceptional Deflection. Final cost: 75, 450 gp. |
| Darth Sephiroth11-23-06, 04:00 PM | That works, adding the Adamantine material would be a healthy addition as well to make it able to pull off the chop through things function. If I remember right, any magical item can possibly glow. |

It's pretty good, all things considered. For those who want it a bit differently, I maintain my earlier suggestion about a Flame Blade wand, with appropriate metamagics applied to it. |

| obsidianrose11-23-06, 04:47 PM | Why not just modify the monk's belt into some sort of item that lets you manifest a blade like a soulknife of +5 levels. |
| crimsonwolf11-23-06, 05:04 PM | okay recap ...umm ya all those nice effects and make it a medium wonder item? umm immune to anit magics.. and umm make the fire or whatever elemntal come from a ruby either on the pummle or in the weapon itself. Extending rod magic for the adimite to collapse into the hilt...counter spell (focus ray ) for the attacks like that...would this thing be able to hit etheral creatures?? and if we are talking about a jedi build i would put these enchaments on the weapon..... brilliant engery ghost touch ki focus .....now for outside effects.... when it activates .. -5 hide .. it makes noise and it glows lol....1d6 fear... something like this is going to be legendary after you start using it for awhile...i dont even want to think about what happens when you roll a natrual 1 :s that can get ugly |
| Jeffersonian00011-23-06, 10:23 PM | My Techsmith built a light saber in a Forgotten Realms campaign. I based it on Spiritual Weapon, and priced it like this: 1 (spell level) x 7 (caster level+6 to reflect level needed to change the actual spell effect) x 2000 (continuous item) x 4 (round/level duration of original spell) = 56,000gp base price, 28,000gp material cost + 2240xp. The weapon dealt 2d6 force damage, and could be use 2-handed for power attacking or one handed for finesse work. Crit range was 19-20/x2 damage, yet only required a melee touch attack to hit. All in all, it cost more than it was useful, so it was fairly balanced. In a later Eberron build, I used the spell Thunderlance (from the Spell Compendium) to build a better light saber. It dealt 3d6 force damge, crit range was 20/x3, required a melee touch attack, and the length could be adjusted upto a 15' reach. The weapon could only be used for 1 min each, though. SJ |
| forrestfire1511-23-06, 11:03 PM | change the angelwing razor from the BoVD to make it less powerful and give it a reflective power... |
| Tempest Stormwind11-24-06, 11:22 AM | Problem is that you can't apply Strength to a Flame Blade... :( Big whoop. The best lightsaber wielders in history were Mace Windu (who's fit, but not necessarily musclebound) and the small, ancient, and scrawny Yoda. The only time strength seems to matter is during a saber lock, seeing as the movies show that slight contact with the saber is more than enough to sever limbs. As a spell, it bypasses damage reduction, and as a touch attack it bypasses armor (touch attack). The lightsaber is also finessable (in SWd20, for obvious reasons), so Strength isn't necessary if you get the damage up there via metamagic feats (i.e. better quality components and better attuned crystals). Energy Admixture comes to mind, as does Empower (just off the top of my head). If you don't like Flame Blade, Faerun has a similar spell called Moon Blade that seems closer in base appearance to a lightsaber. Why not just modify the monk's belt into some sort of item that lets you manifest a blade like a soulknife of +5 levels. The Psi boards have done this already; look up "Crystal Hilt". But THE MIND BLADE IS NOT A LIGHTSABER. It can look like freaking anything and has no properties that a lightsaber would need. I've seen mind blades that look like swords, icicles, energy beams, invisible slices of air (think the Phantom sword from Soul Edge/Soul Calibur 2), rubber chickens, and more. Just because the artists always choose glowing blades doesn't mean that it can't be other things. (Hell, Races of Eberron shows a female Inspired soulknife with a STAFF-LIKE, SOLID mind blade...) |
| PrinceCurtis11-24-06, 05:57 PM | I think the lightsaber cutting through stuff is more or less it's energy so i don't think adamitine should do anything |
| TheDarkLord11-24-06, 08:44 PM | Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with Tempest. From what I saw strength does absolutely nothing for the light saber. Light sabers might repel each other giving the impression of solidity. It's been a while since i've actually seen the Star Wars trilogy, so I could be mistaken. |
| Regular_K11-25-06, 12:03 AM | Continual Flame doesn't burn... That's why you can't light a troll up with an everbruning torch. trust me, I've tried! |
| Baron Rod11-25-06, 12:17 AM | Final Weapon: 1d8 slashing 18-20/x2 exotic (50 gp-ish; see elven thinblade). I don't agree with that cost. If you look in the Armor section, Expceptional Arrow Deflection a +8 ability grants the ability to deflect Ray and ranged Touch attacks. +8 is quite abit more than 25K. Baron Rod |
| CryoSilver11-25-06, 08:46 AM | That's an unreasonably high cost, and at the very least, you end up with a weapon that costs 810,000gp (because of the x10 epic multiplier). Look at the ring of Spell Turning, which does the same thing, but with almost all spells, and for far less and far more reliably. |
| Masterfulks11-26-06, 09:00 PM | Power Attack would most definitely work with it. I had always read the blade of a lightsaber to be weightless. So it's not quite as solid as say a longsword. It's going to pass through anything other than another lightsaber blade, and perhaps a select few materials. So how hard you swing isn't really going to make it do more damage. At least that's the way I see it. |
| Ryu Katsuragi11-27-06, 10:35 AM | Just check d20 Star Wars. If I remember, it was a 2d8 (forget the critical) sword. Finesseable. Added Strength to damage. Ignored Hardness (I'm not sure if it was touch, though... I doubt it). Jedi classes added bonus damage to it (something like +1d8 per every four levels). Deflection was a feature of the wielder, given by class, not the sword itself. It has some weight, due to the handle (the only weighted part of it). |
