Well.. I would say it depends on the complexity of the craft: Barque | Barquentine | Bermuda rig | Bilander | Brig | Brigantine | Caravel | Carrack | Catamaran | Catboat | Clipper | Drakkar | Dutch Clipper | Cog | Corvette | Cutter | Dinghy | Dhow | Fifie | Fluyt | Fore & Aft Rig | Frigate | Full Rigged Ship | Gaff Rig | Galleon | Gunter Rig | Hermaphrodite Brig | Hoy | Junk | Keelboat | Ketch | Longship | Mersey Flat | Multihull | Nao | Norfolk Wherry | Pink | Pocket Cruiser | Polacca | Pram | Proa | Sailing hydrofoil | Schooner | Sharpie | Ship of the Line | Skipjack | Sloop | Smack | Snow | Square Rig | Tall Ship | Thames Sailing Barge | Trimaran | Wherry | Windjammer | Windsurfer | Xebec | Yacht | Yawl... The bigger the boat/ship, the more complex they usually are. You need to pin your DM down on exactly what type ships your character would know about. And yes.. if you had Profession- Sailor or Boater @ 5+ Ranks, I would give you a normal +2 synergy bonus for each. EDIT: I am not sure, as I have never had the opportunity to crack the cover, but I believe I recall a WotC Supplemental book called Stormwracked or some such.. I wonder if it would have any further info on the DCs for building boats/ships.... |
| Black Mantha01-23-07, 09:43 AM | My guess? DC 15: rowboat DC 20: galley, keelboat, longship DC 25: sailship, warship and given the prices for those things, you'd need to work on it with quite a few helpers to finish it within a lifetime. |
| risner01-23-07, 10:01 AM | Craft Boatmaking DM sets the DC. Pay 1/3 the cost of the boat for RAW materials. Stormwrack p84 Boatmaking = Huge or smaller boats. Stormwrack p85 Shipwright = Gargantuan or larger boats (doesn't use Craft skill) |

| IrishRover01-23-07, 10:53 AM | It does take lots of people--many "aid another" checks. I would also allow several seperate tasks to be run simultaneously on bigger ships. Craft (ropemaker) and craft (weaver) could be ongoing at the same time as craft (shipwright) Here's the way to figure it out, I think. Look up some real world ship construction times on the web, and how many people were working on them. Then, with fairly typical values for NPC's, see what any system you develop takes. If it takes too long or too little time, then adjust it--perhaps allowing more people to make seperate task rolls. I'd say a master shipwright would likely have a Craft (ships) at at least +18 Level 10 artisan, skill focus--shipwright, Int 15 Note that, if seasoned wood is not available, that takes time to season, or the ship will only last a few years. Wood for shipbuilding takes several years to season. This wood is part of the raw materials cost--but might not be available. A full shipyard would count as masterwork tools, a more typical riverside building ways that builds occasional ships would give no bonus or penalty, and an improvised ways would have a variable penalty. (The builders always take 10) |
| tarkin01-23-07, 03:17 PM | For ships, they don't use the Aid Another rule. instead, they claim that ships are so large, that multiple people can work on it simultaneously. Each person makes a Craft check, each individual check completes (or destroys materials if they fail), x gp worth of work, until all is done. |

Wonder if it would make sense to do things like full plate that way as well. |
| risner01-23-07, 09:54 PM | The section on shipwright in Stormwrack covers most of this. First of all, it isn't a Craft (Shipwright) check but a Knowledge check. Second, it is considered you have hundreds (or was it thousands?) of people working on the ship. Third, it has preset times to complete and modifiers for all sorts of things including shortage of workers, lumber, etc. |
