Hey, I have a quick question on celestial armor, namely, why is it such a low caster level?

I mean, the dmg states that for straight armor boosts (+1 +2, etc) an item gets a caster level equal to three times the armor bonus. Now, celestial armor, funky super light chainmail +3 that allows you to fly, -and- allows you to use a max dex bonus of +8, only has a caster level of 5, as opposed to 9.

Now, this means I can craft it at fifth level, whereas if i want to craft a normal +3 chain shirt, I have to wait till ninth.

What???

I'm thinking that this was purely to limit the duration of the fly spell that it can cast.

In game reasoning- celestials just want better PR.

i believe the caster level of 5th is referring to the armor's fly spell; you would still use the rules for crafting armor to make it. The reason it says fifth is because that is the minimum required CL for fly. You need a caster level of 9th to make celestial armor.

I'd agree.

In fact, an item's caster level has pretty much nothing to do with the required level of the caster who creates it. When making a custom item, you can set the item CL to be anything you want (up to 20, I guess). For instance, a level 3 wizard can make sovereign glue, a CL 20 item.

The actual prerequisite level is what is needed to cast the prereq spells, have the prereq skill ranks, or meet the weapon/armor enhancement bonus requirement. So for the case of celestial armor, that is definitely CL 9.

Why would a level 9 caster limit the fly effect to CL 5? That I don't know. Presumably, a higher CL would cost more.

It's also not obvious to me if you tried to suppress celestial armor with dispel magic, whether you should use CL 5 or CL 9 for the check.
