| Juliomartell08-11-07, 06:55 AM | I have question as to if there are such things as making a wonderous or universal item that applies other extraordinary abilities to characters who don't have them. Anyone mind helping me figure that one out? |
| DM_Death08-11-07, 07:42 AM | Do you mean things like class features? Or just extraordinary abilities in general? |
| Juliomartell08-11-07, 07:43 AM | Both if necessary to specify. |
| DM_Death08-11-07, 07:58 AM | I don't think Magic items can give Extraordinary abilities, now that I think about it. Extraordinary abilities function within an antimagic field, and can't be dispelled. They also can't be created by a spell. So, I think the answer to your original question is, "No. Magic items cannot duplicate extraordinary abilities." What sort of extraordinary abilities are you looking for? |
| Juliomartell08-11-07, 08:00 AM | Such as ones a factotum can be able to get access to that most magic items have been seen giving like things such as unarmed damage or such I think. Have there ever been magic or power(psion) items that give such abilities? |
| DM_Death08-11-07, 08:52 AM | Psionic items will grant Psi-like abilities, not extraordinary abilities. I'm not sure about the factotem... |
| foxtail08-11-07, 12:21 PM | Magic items can certainly create effects that mimic extraordinary abilities (a ring of evasion is the classic example). Such items are still subject to dispelling and antimagic fields, however. |
| Juliomartell08-11-07, 08:17 PM | can ya help me out with that then? How do I select a proper spell that mimics an extraordinary ability? |
| foxtail08-12-07, 01:29 AM | Depends; what are you trying to make? |
| Juliomartell08-12-07, 01:30 AM | I am trying to make a vestment of MANY abilities is the truth. evasion would be one of them, plus item creation(artificer eberron), and other such. |
| TwistedShadow08-16-07, 01:58 AM | Here is a somewhat related question on that, the magic items such as manual of gainful exercise (think thats what its called) allows you to gain an Inherint Bonus to strength (there by a magic item that is granting a bonus that still functions even in an anti magic field) Could you not follow the same basic template for creating such a tome that would grant the reader a extraordinary or supernatural ability such as evasion or an increase to base speed Of course I am not saying that such an Item would be cheap by any means and creating such an item would require someone involved with the items creation to have said class ability as well or a spell that confers similar effects. Like I would see it as possible to create a manual of unarmed fighting, (a wondrous Item) using a spell like "Fist of Stone" to give the character the Feat Improved Unarmed Fighting. But that is something i would toss around with a couple other DM's first so i can get a broader view about balance issues on something like that |
| Juliomartell08-16-07, 02:28 AM | Well I hope people can be able to help give me some ideas as to what spells go with what kind of Extraordinary ability. |
| Dheran08-16-07, 12:44 PM | I'd start by looking for spells with the same name. Like the Ranger's camouflage ability, and the Camouflage spell (Spell Compendium). The spell doesn't do the same thing as the class ability but it's similar enough that you can work with it. |
