So, I introduced an intelligent rapier into my campaign in the hands of our very competent swashbuckler/shadowblade (and in case that didn't tip you off, we don't exactly run a min/max type group). For the most part he's comic relief (he likes to compose poems on how various creatures' bloods taste while he impales them), though he can drop a crucial hint now and then.

Anyway, our swashbuckler wants to buy an intelligent sheath. A female-personality intelligent sheath. So he can... ah.. have some companionship.

How do I go about letting her have one of these crafted? I mean, where does the soul come from? I felt it would be stretching the suspension of disbelief for them to just happen to stumble upon an intelligent female sheath as treasure, and while I've considered the "quest for his long lost female counterpart, separated millenia ago" angle, I don't think it would fit in the campaign at the moment. She has the money and the contacts necessary for such a crafting endeavour, but where does the intelligence come from?

The creation of the magic item creates the soul, the same way human babies get souls, and the same way Living Constructs/awakened plants get their soul.

It is not a concern.

I.E. You don't need to kill someone/find someone dying to do it.

The soul comes from the Bastion of Souls on the positive energy plane if I'm not mistaken.

Do constructs have souls? But regardless Wizards can create golems, so they could craft a magic item. As an extension of the "Parted long long time ago" you could have her have been destroyed, and the wizard crafting the item summons that specific Soul/entity to enhabit the newly crafted magic item.

Just remember, the sheath has to be magic first to be intelligent. Might I suggest a Sheath of Keen Edges?
