Crafting Items cost question [Archive] - Wizards Community

Say I wanted to make a ring of Mage Armor (+4 to AC). Mage Armor is a level 1 spell. Would I use the multipliers for a command word level 1 spell, or would I base it on the armor bonus of +4? I am considering using Greater Mage Armor since it gives +6, but if I have to use the multiplier for armor bonus instead of a level 3 spell, it starts getting cost prohibitive.

I'm using this as an example--I'm going to use a Pearl of Power for Mage Armor, but if I wanted to craft items using other spells that add AC bonus, I'd like to know in general which formula to use. Thanks!

Base it on the armor bonus. The spell pricing formula is only a general guideline, it is much better to base the cost on the actual bonus granted (if it grants a bonus), or by comparison to similar existing items (if any).

A ring of Mage Armor would act essentially as Bracers of Mage Armor +4, so would cost 16,000 gp. (Or 24,000 gp if your DM is a real stickler for body slot affinities.)

It absolutely would not be based on the spell, since the item rules would prohibit using the SLxCL formula.

The formula is last resort pricing, and can never be used if a similar item exists or even if an item of similar power level exists.

Also to follow up on Jaelis said, it isn't that you shouldn't be using the formula. It is that you don't have the option to use the formulas in the case of similar items or similar power in items.
