| daishi509-09-04, 10:12 PM | I have several questions about crafting items. First, my dwarven cleric is considering crafting adamantite full plate armor to enchant. But my clerics reason for this is to craft an entire suit of armor/magical items/weapons to donate to his church as proof of his skill, and dedication for the greatest warriors of the church to use. But, the DMG lists the price as somewhere around 16000 for the market price of the adamantite. As I figure it, at level 10, with maxed crafting skill of 13 with masterwork tools +2, and dwarven bonus of +2, along with a +2 bonus my dm is willing to give me for the assistance from his apprentices for a total of +19, so my best possible roll is 39 I don't have the DC of crafting masterwork full plate on me, but I think it was somewhere around 25. My dm also requires me to work by day, because it is very common for me to be interrupted when working. so crafting is 1,600,000 (16000 market price * 10 for crafting * 10 for crating by day) my best possible would be 25 * 39 = 975 Am I really looking at a time of 1700 days possibly to complete my armor? Thats one way i see it working. The second way i see it is the base price of full plate is 1000 about, and that the additional price of adamantite does not increase crafting time, but only sale price, and price to make it. But that is also not good, because then i can pump them out just less then 1 a day! Is there some middle ground, or will my dwarf stick with normal masterwork full plate only because of out of game reasons. ( namely its no fun to spend all that time when i sure not to ever see the benefit in game, and my dwarf could easily make a full suit of armor, weapons and magic items in that time, and get so much more out of it) I also don't like the idea of it being so fast to make, and I don't see a clear ruling. Also, I came out with a price for gauntlets of divine power, as per the spell, as costing 112,000 for continous, is that right? Also I would love more recommendations for items for my dwarf to craft himself, he is a cleric with domains war and strength. Thank you for your help, all suggestions must be passed by DM for considerations of fairness, sense, and fun. So the more detailed the info the better. |
| macfry09-09-04, 11:03 PM | level 4 spell x level 7 caster x 2000 for continuous = 56000 56000 x 4 (duration measured in rounds) = 224,000 The crafting rules in dnd have always been debatable, and never sat right with me. I think someone should come up with a working variant. |
| daishi509-09-04, 11:11 PM | ok, so for a continous item its *2000 for continous, and * 4 again for measured in rounds, i thought it was * 4000 for continous items measured in rounds. But from the rest of your statement i guess that is not truly clear. |

In D&D, smart people go to a wizard with the spell Fabricate/purchase a magic item that lets you fabricate 1/day. This lets you make the item in 1 day, but you still need the craft ranks. ------------- Divine Power is one of the worst items to make a magic item out of. It's worth varies the wearer, so it is hard to price. Also, high level non-adventurer classes (20th level commoner merchant) have money are going to benefit more from it, so an adventurer would never have enough cash to make it worth there while. As a DM, I generally just tell the player that they can not make such an item, as it is not worth my time and energy to calculate the price, while the players . (The rules do NOT allow you to make a continuous item out of anything you want to make. You can make any scroll, any potion of 3rd level or less, and any wand of 4th level or less, anything published in the DMG, but anything else is subject to DM decisions) |

| Dwagarik01-05-07, 03:33 PM | This is how we're handling exotic material crafting in my session. Since the process of making an item is the same for a mundane material as it is an exotic one, the time required is the same for the exotic variant as it is for the mundane item. e.g. Mithril full plate costs 10,500gp on the market whereas regular steel full plate costs 1500gp. You use 15,000sp for the crafting time to make the mithril full plate and NOT 105,000sp. Using accelerated crafting by adding 10 to the DC you should be able to manufacture the mithril full plate in about 19 weeks instead of...133 weeks. Again, this variant for crafting exotic material items hinges on the fact that the manufacturing process is the same regardless of material. The only counter argument is the use of adamantine which is harder than steel. All the other materials should take the same time. I hope this helps. |
| Tony Vargas01-05-07, 04:05 PM | One variant I've considered for things like mithral and Adamantine is to figure the crafting time as per making a MW item + 1 day per 1000 gp of special material value. The cost, however, is 1/3rd the normal cost, plus half the additional special material cost. I figure, since the magnitude of the cost of such items is comparable to magic items, the time and cost savings hould also be comparable. Of course, taken to it's logical conclusion, that'd also call for an exp cost to work mithral... |

I like it, sweet and simple. Allows both realistic craft times for rural smiths and craftsmen, and for faster, more productive crafting schemes for highly skilled artisans and heavy industry. |

Also, I came out with a price for gauntlets of divine power, as per the spell, as costing 112,000 for continous, is that right? First, use 35 for the DC (add +10 DC) to speed it: 35*39 = 1365 In RL real plate takes 6 to 10 months to make. I can see how Adamantine plate could take 3 years. So not only is it "Real Life" approved (in my mind), it is by RAW. As for the Divine Power item, if you used SL X CL X Y,YYY price model for that spell, it was incorrectly prices. The Spell grants more than one effect (3 actually) and you need to price each separately. 36,000 gp for the STR (6*6*1,000 for Ability bonus) 100,000 gp minimum average for the additional BAB (without consideration for the "additional attacks" it grants. 10*10*2,000 / 2 for To Hit bonus ) 12,000 gp average for the temporary hit points (based on Vest of False Life, S&F p77) That means the item costs a minimum of 148,000 gp. |
| Galeigh01-06-07, 04:04 AM | I dunno about what you guys are doing (I haven't read craft skill so i dont know RAW version) but our DM measures time to create like this... its 1 day per 1000g of the price of creation for a magical item and 1 day per 100g for a non-magical item. so say you have a magic longsword that costs 32,000g to make, it'll take 32 days to make it. and a non-magical suit of armor that would cost 300g to make takes 3 days to make. its not perfect, but it works out ok. |
