Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place for a crafting question or not, but:

I'm looking at taking the idea from spool of Endless rope (C.Ad, p 135) but adapting it as a more heavy duty version.

The idea is the rope is:
1) animated,
2) retracts completely into it's container (most likely a glove or bracer)
3) possibly different rope types (spikes chain, hemp, silk) (but this is more of a repeat craft augmentation - so not an issue)
4) has different "heads" (grappling hook, piton, possible piercing / bludgeoning weapon head), that can be changed automatically when the rope is fully retracted.

I'm trying to work out the cost, which would basically be a wonderous item (it's intended as utility). However, the SoER is 2000gp (spell component is just Leomunds Secret Chest) and I can't figure out how they arrived at this price.
the numbers I got were:
animate rope CL:1xSpL:1*2000 (cont. use) = 2000gp
LSC: CL:9xSpL:5x2000 (cont. use) = 90000gp
Locate object: CL3xSpL2x2000 (cont. use) = 12000gp (From belt of many pockets for finding items)
cost 500ft of rope material,
cost of each head (assume cost of item from PHB)

Now I understand a discount might be involved due to the size and nature of the object, but it does seem it should be such a big difference.

I think the problem is the formula for the spell cost - should I be using something else instead? (x50 (spell completion, single use) on LSC brings it out at 2250 which, with discount, seems about right)

Can anyone please advise where I'm going wrong?

First of all for continuous use, is CL: 1 x SpL: 1 * 2000 x 4 (if continuous use items are based on a spell thats in ROUNDS then you x4 the price)

So that means base price for just the spell is 8000gp

Now.. Leomunds Chest must cost 5,000gp and the replica is 50gp (according to 3.5 players handbook)

Leomunds Secret Chest is a 5th level spell... thats CL: 9 SpL: 5 x 2000 x 1/2 (cont use) = 45,000 gp (i dunno where you got level 2 spell from??)

Considering that the rope would probably be masterwork, you are looking at +300gp for every 50' of rope, so thats extra 3,000gp

Again, the cost of 6 different heads, +300gp each. = 1,800gp

so we are now looking at, 8,000 + 5,050 + 45,000 + 3,000 + 1,800 = 63,000 roughly.

So thats 63,000gp worth of spells and materials for your little toy.

Enjoy!!

the pricing guidelines are guidelines. and just because an item requires a certain spell in it's creation process does not mean it duplicates that spell, nor that it follows the cost guidelines that an item of that spell would use. you use the SL * CL * X guidelines pretty much if and only if:

1) you are duplicating the spell, or almost duplicating the spell, mechanically speaking (flavor duplications carry no cost).
2) you are not ignoring a pricing method based on what the spell does. for example, bracers that grant continuous mage armor cost as bracers of armor +4, and do not use SL * CL * X
3) you do not have an existing item that you can use as a basis. for example, in your case you already have a basis item (the spool of endless rope). use that as the basis of the price, then probably double or triple it and you're good, IMO. the original method of pricing it is irrelevant at this point, as the only question now is how much more it should cost than the basic unit.
