I am making a two weapon fighter that uses a sword and board technique. Feats from PHB2 allow for a longsword shield basher and it should be fun. Here is my question.

At higher levels I will want a better shield used as a weapon then the +1 Bashing one I have now. I have read you can enchant a shield as a weapon in it's own right as per the PHB, but.....

1) Does this mean it has a completely seperate enhancement from its defensive properties. IE a +2 Shield that is also enchanted as a +2 weapon would have two completely seperate sets of enchantments. If this is the case does the +10 max apply to the object on a whole or does each seperate property (weapon and shield) have a max of +10.

2) Are shield spikes mandatory to enchant a shield as a weapon other than applying the bashing property?

2) I dont have the Magic Item Compendium so I a wondering if there are some other abilites used on shields as weapons other than the core Bashing.

I'll take a stab (or would that be a bash?) at it...

That's how I would play it, 2 separate enchantments. I wouldn't apply a max to the bonus but rather just go by the max item cost guidelines.
2) Are shield spikes mandatory to enchant a shield as a weapon other than applying the bashing property?

Definately not, if you look in the PHB under the shield entries in the equipment section it says a shield can be enchanted as a weapon. This is separate from the Shield Spike entry which says that a spiked shield can also be enchanted as a weapon.

2) I dont have the Magic Item Compendium so I a wondering if there are some other abilites used on shields as weapons other than the core Bashing.

I don't see any weaponlike shield enchants other than one that allows you to throw your shield. Any of the new (or existing) weapon properties should be appropriate for when the shield is used as a weapon however.
