| Sakusami11-06-06, 07:05 PM | Okay, I am currently playing an artificer and have a couple of questions. Something that I was told by a friend to make is "Goggles of Use Magic Device + 20" I was astounded that I could create something like that at lvl 10, but he said I should be more than able. Then he said it should only cost me somewhere between 10 and 20k gold. Well, looking on the rules at the website I saw a little section on a "Ring of True Strike" Now that was placed somewhere in the 400k gold range and I could see why. But that bonus it provides is a bonus to attacking, the bonus on the goggles would be for a skill bonus. Does this change the cost so drastically? Or is my friend just 100% completely wrong? Any help and ideas for artificers that plan to weild wands/staffs and be crafters is also appreciated. Thanks ~Sakusami |

As far as basic rules creation guidelines go, your friend is right about being able to make your "goggles of Use Magic Device+20" for a relatively smaller amount of money. But remember that any new item created, and its cost, is up to your DM. |

A +20 to Use Magic Device is quite a bit more powerful than a +20 to, say, Spot, since having such a hefty bonus on UMD permanently opens the way to a whole lot of magic item abuse. I would fully understand a DM calling for UMD to cost twice as much as other skills. Maybe more. |

This leads to a precedence of requiring ranks or similar to grant a bonus. That would mean your Goggles would need be made by a 17th level player (or NPC) with 20 ranks in UMD. However, there is no direct rule which leads many to debate if the ranks should be required. I require them because it makes sense. |
