| Deviston06-14-05, 06:29 PM | I am at a dillema. The rules for adding an extra ability to a single item (( such as adding invisibility to a ring of regeneration )) are clear and verily precise. Here is where I'm alittle confused. What about adding effects to an item that takes up extra slots? Ex. I have a large necklace that links to rings. They can not be unatached and the necklace is the only thing magicked. Now . .. as it takes up the ring slots on my hands . . can I later magic the rings? They would not be more thaan one magicked ring per hand, but they attach to the necklace. Also . . . when magically crafting a helmet . . do you have to use CAAA or CWI? And then apply the above question. Ex. A helmet that completely covers the head and neck and shoulders. The lenses or the helmet are glass and have a charm effect. The helmet itself is enchanted with the headband of intel magic. The neck armoring is enchanted with a wisdom magic. what is the ruling on pricing and slots? |

And then apply the above question.Generally, CWI, since it is not primarily "armour" by the equipment rules (much in the same way that magic gauntlets are CWI). Ex. A helmet that completely covers the head and neck and shoulders. The lenses or the helmet are glass and have a charm effect. The helmet itself is enchanted with the headband of intel magic. The neck armoring is enchanted with a wisdom magic. what is the ruling on pricing and slots? As long as each portion of the item occupies the correct slot, just price it as multiple items. If it allows you to gain the benefits of using a slot without actually doing so, then treat that ability as either "wrong slot" or "slotless". This won't affect the cost of other abilities. |
| Deviston06-14-05, 10:27 PM | slotless, wrong slot? not exactly clear on your meaning . . . |
| Jaid06-14-05, 11:31 PM | there are already modifiers in the DMG for if an item does not require a slot (ex ioun stones), or takes up a slot that is not "related" to it's function... for example, if i wanted bracers that increase my speed, that would be "wrong slot". increased speed should come from boots. otoh, if i had boots of armor, that would also be "wrong slot". iirc, the cost for slotless is double (i think), and wrong slot is maybe +50% or something like that (uhhh... i am not at all sure if it is 50% at all... that's more like a guess than anything). if i wasn't so lazy, i'd even dig up the SRD references for youP |
| Deviston06-15-05, 10:39 AM | But its not necesarilly "wrong slot" its more like extra slot. it takes up the place of two slots with only one function. and the other is, one item with many functions that take up the appropriate slots, but is one big item. a head peice that has functions of a necklace, circlet, and lenses and takes up those spots appropriatly, but does that reduce cost or raise it? to combine many items into one, with no change in slot use. This is the best way i can think of explaining it. Ever seen Stargate? Any of it? If so, look at the Jaffa headdresses. those huge metal helmets with the eyes and everything, its kinda like that but, magical enhancements into the lenses, neckpeice, and cranium area. and when the cranium part is retracted you lose the benefit of the circlet enhancement. |
| Jaid06-15-05, 12:02 PM | i would probably count that as normal cost, so long as you have no more effects being granted than slots used, and so long as the effects granted are appropriate to the slot. any excess would be priced as slotless, of course. but anyways, if for example you wanted one item that gave the effects of eyes of the eagle, headband of intellect +2, and amulet of natural armor +3, and it used the headband, goggle, and amulet slot, that'd be normal cost. as far as multiple slots for one effect, maybe i would give a -10% discount, but that's about it. |
| Cailet Rinne06-15-05, 01:04 PM | As far as multiple slots for a single effect: I don't think any price change should come into play. If a piece takes up two slots but is only enchanted in one, what prevents the second slot from being enchanted, later? And, if by some means enchanting the one slot burns the others against further enchantment, the only benefit the creater should gain for inefficient work would be selling it full price to the uneducated buyer. And I would additionally rule suspsicion as to the quality/reliability of the piece. Of course, it's still too early for mechanics, so this is just my opinion. |
| Deviston06-15-05, 03:25 PM | gotcha. the next thing to talk about will be an item i am thinking of. I am a warlock. I have fell flight. i want to enchant a cloak in such a way, that when i activate my wings, the cloak becomes a part of them and gives me 10 more speed and one bump in maneuverability. i dont know how to mechanic it or price it. |
| Andrew06-15-05, 05:40 PM | Ex. I have a large necklace that links to rings. They can not be unatached and the necklace is the only thing magicked. Now . .. as it takes up the ring slots on my hands . . can I later magic the rings? They would not be more thaan one magicked ring per hand, but they attach to the necklace. Also remember, there's nothing stopping a character from wearing 10 magic rings. It's just the flow of magical energy on the body that makes it so that only 2 function. Things only "take up" a slot when they're magical or when there's no sane way to wear the items together. I do have to say, the items you've used as examples seem unusually unwieldy. Is there a reason why you'd want to combine items like this that hasn't been said, like perhaps some other enchantment you want to only pay for once that benefits "an item," for example some kind of charm that lets the owner always know where it is, or just some time expedient of "I'm only putting on one item, it should be only one action to do so!" Anything like that should either cost the same as applying it to all the seperate items, or for the time donning, take the time to put on all the items seperately (it's not going to be a simple act to put on some huge necklace that connects to rings). |
| Jaid06-15-05, 05:58 PM | well, technically an item that just adds to your base speed should add to your fly speed as well assuming it is based on your base speed also. if not... hard to say... maybe price it the same as a rod of metamagic (which is the closest thing i can think of for this effect), probably only a +1 spell level equivalent. of course, that would limit uses/day to 3 i think, and i dunno if it would be greater or lesser... probably lesser, but that's just my personal guess. |
| Deviston06-15-05, 06:32 PM | well . .. the thing is, my flight is usable whenever. i want the cloak to apply only when im flying (( so i dont get the bonus to speed otherwise )) and it works as long as im flying for any number of times per day. (( personally, i dont see it as oh so powered, 10 feet and a bump to maneuverability . . but hey, thats for yall to help me out on )) also. the item given above is what i want. It counts for the helm part of full plate (( or breastplate )) and goes on before the rest of the armor. It has these effects: -part that occupies necklace has DMG Nacklace of Adaptation effects -eyes slots contain DMG eyes of charming -helm has unique ability. When thought comes into head (( thought activated )) the helm (( as a full round action that provokes an AoO )) retracts into itself leaving the helm efectively undonned. One most think it donned for it to reform in its previous shape and this is a move action that does not provoke an AoO. Also. A glove and bracer combo. When donned (( full round action the provokes an AoO )) this allows the weilder to make a touch attack on any prone target. If the attack succeeds, the target makes a will save (( DC 19 negates )) or is frozen in place as long as the weilder maintains hand placement (( until the user removes hand from targets hand or the target passes a new save once ever minute, whichever comes first )) and a Concentration check DC 25. Then, the weilder may choose any one of the following effects: - detect thoughts as the Medalion of Thoughts - channel any spell through the weapon directly into the target, increasing the DC's for Will Save requiring effects by 2. This requires an additional Concentration check DC 30. I need help in pricing and what spells it would take to cast and CL and such others. |
