| Axiomatic_vampire01-28-08, 07:44 AM | This is something I'm cooking up for the end-game of a high level campaign. The PCs will be level 18-21. Ashi-Taba's Chain Reaction. Major Artifact. Ashi-Taba's Chain Reaction appears to be nothing more than an elaborately carved pewter rod 2 feet long, with gold inlay. A magic user that identifies the special properties may, 1/day, start a chain reaction with any spell that causes hit point damage. The spell resolves normally with the following exceptions: It cannot be countered, and the caster receives a +10 bonus to any checks made to overcome spell resistence, the spell is delayed for one round, and the area of the spell becomes a 20ft radius burst with range: long. After the spell resolves, Ashi-Taba's Chain reaction works as follows: Immediately after the spell resolves, the spell takes effect again (as in the case of Metamagic: Twin) with a random variable from the following table. Roll a D8 to resolve. 1: empower and widen 2: Maximise and Widen (if already maximised or intensified empower again adding 50% to the already empowered damage) 3: Explosive spell and widen (If already explosive, roll again). 4: Energy Admixtured Roll a d6 to determine new energy type. 1 fire, 2 elec, 3 cold, 4 acid, 5 sonic, 6 force (special) and Widen 5: Twin and Widen 6: increase Save DC by 4 and Widen 7: Intensify and Widen 8: Piercing Spell (2x damage to vulnerable creatures, ignore resistince, Half damage to immune creatures as searing spell, but applicable to all energy types present in the chain reaction) and Widen. After determining the variable, there is a chance that the reaction continues. Roll a D6. On a 1, the reaction ends. On any other result, add another random effect from the above table to the spell and re-resolve. All effects apply to subsequent spell effects as the chain reaction continues. Continue until the reaction ends. All widen effects double the spells area rather than increasing the multiplier by a factor of 1. For example, a reaction widened four times has a radius of 320ft. Will it work? What I'm going for here is megatonage with a realistic chance to destroy the party if they aren't careful. I'm debating whether or not to leave the one round delay for dimension doors and greater teleports. That might make the item too risk-free. |

The main thing is the 83% chance to chain. lowering this would be the best thing o balance that out. you should lower that to maybe a 50% roll. Or limit to 2 to X number of chain, based on % roll. Like: 10-50% : 2 chains 50-75% : 3 chains 75-100% : 4 chains like that you sure of 2 chain all the time plus your overall chance to get 4 chain is higher since you have 25% chance to get it on 1 roll and the other way you need 4 roll over 17%. Also this has limited the infinite loop and by the same time the level. putting an item with possible infinite loop is a god level item. |
