Are the items in the robe of useful items randomly determined when created, and if not, does the caster have to provide the items in question to put into the robe (which can exceed the value of the robe without undue effort). Certainly the magic scroll or potion of cure serious wounds wouldn't seem to be created by the fabricate spell.

I would think yes, the number and nature of the special patches are randomly created (thus, the creator only has to provide material value for the robe itself).

It does present the interesting yet unlikely scenario, that the robe could turn out to bring in more than the market price of a random robe (16 patches of 10 gems each, for instance).

Fascinating Idea, creating a robe with your own, pre-chosen items in it. That could be fun.

In my games, a PC created robe has 16 items that the player chooses from the list. These items must be supplied and their cost is added to the final market value, but not cost to create as it relates to XP or time.

What about adding items of similar dimmensions? For instance, replacing the 4x2 steel mirror with a steel shield? Or adding silk rope rather than hempen?

I've had two PCs with Robes, and both times they've asked for them with certain items and the rest random. One asked for a door, a ladder and a lantern of everburning flame, while the second time he (same player, different PC) had it with a grappling hook, three daggers and two animals a la a bag of creatures. Is that the name? I forget, but it's the thing that spits out badgers, elephants, mice and rhinoceroses, among other animals.

I allow PCs to request a few items that aren't too majorly powerful, or minor spells / item powers, as a robe gives them as once-offs. The animals he got were pre-set from the weakest bag, so he had them as distractions.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

Another fun way to annoy the GM is to try and sell it at fuill cost after using all the random patches but four.
