My DM allows us to use the table in the dmg for creation custom magic items. I wanted spell resistance for my 18th level cleric. I have about 160,000 gold to spend. So I calculated what the SR for the item would be. Assuming I make it with my craft wonderous items feat it will cost me 1/2*10,000 gp for each number of SR above 12. By this formula I could afford to make an item with 12 SR+ 32 more SR costing 160,000 gp and the corresponding time and experience. It seems like a SR of 44 is a little high for an 18th level character to have. A 20th level caster with Greater Spell penetration rolling a 20 on his caster level check couldn't even cast a SR:yes spell at me. I would be almost immune to magic. How or should the formula be modofied?

See the armor properties section (under magic items) for guidelines. According to that, SR also requires the spell "Spell Resistance" (Cleric 5th) as a prereq. That spell cast at 18th level would produce an SR of 30. I think that would be a fair limit.

hmm...i wouldnt allow it...i would say max of 30..because dr 42 would be from a 30th lvl cleric casting it. Cant create a item greater then your caster lvl right? Just dont make sense that a 18th lvl cleric could create a item that you would need to be 30th lvl to cast.

what dark said- and remember the cost of the item as well- your not just enchanting it (i dont think?) your creating the entire item with magic.

now correct me if thats the dumbest thing ive posted this morning.

I thought usually you actually crafted the item nonmagically, or had someone else produce one that you could work on, having to be better than average. (in the case of weapons/armor, masterwork)

Could be wrong, but think I read this somewhere.

your probably right, but i houserule it as i posted above- why? because i can and because dont want it to be nigh impossible to make what they want if they dont have a certain crafter in the group- sure they could buy the item, but then that takes the point in creating items- to save money.

Being a resistance item, the standard slot would be cloak. Thus you would need a masterwork cloak to proceed. If you wanted it in another slot you would have to pay more.
