| LarsenSan05-04-06, 09:56 AM | Since normal arrows ussually come in packs of 20 units, when creating magical arrows (for example, a killer arrow), is the price listed the price of an arrow or the price of 20 arrows? Having to pay more than 4,000 gp for an only arrow seems expensive to me. |
| tarkin05-04-06, 10:36 AM | Magical Arrows are priced at 1/50 the equivelent weapon price. To make a Magical Sword (including masterwork) costs 2,300 gp plus the cost of the normal sword. To make a Magical arrow, it costs 2,300/50 = 46gp plus the cost of a normal arrow. To make a +2 sword it costs 8,300 gp. A single +2 arrow costs 166 gp. etc. etc. |
| LarsenSan05-04-06, 10:42 AM | What about specifical arrows, like the named Killer Arrow? |
| pres_man05-04-06, 11:09 AM | Actually the way to calculate masterwork ammunition and thus magic ammunition is to make all masterwork ammunition cost 7 gp regardless of type. So 1 masterwork arrow costs 7 gp, 1 masterwork bolt costs 7 gp, 1 masterwork sling bullet costs 7 gp, 1 masterwork shuriken costs ? gp (according to the rules it should be 7 gp, but in the tables in the DMG it is listed as 301 gp, as a reusable throwing weapon). 6 gp + actual value does not work for the chart. Otherwise tarkin said is correct, that being you pay for 50 pieces of ammunition (all of the same type?). As for the slaying arrow (I think this is what you mean by killing arrow), this is a specific magic item, not a standard arrow. Thus you pay the price for the individual arrow (2,282 gp for a regular slaying arrow and 4,057 gp for a greater slaying arrow). This may seem a little pricey but this is a save or die weapon, thus you don't want it too cheap or a bunch of low level characters (PCs or NPCs) would be running around with them. |
| tarkin05-04-06, 12:45 PM | It is correct that a slaying arrow is 1 arrow per purchase. They are individual weapons, not regular arrows. |
| risner05-04-06, 02:07 PM | 1 masterwork shuriken costs ? gp (according to the rules it should be 7 gp, but in the tables in the DMG it is listed as 301 gp, as a reusable throwing weapon). All thrown weapons (non ammunition) is 300+item cost. So a Shuriken costs 1gb and a masterwork Shuriken costs 300+1 or 301gp. Think: Does it have a break chance on miss or 100 percent break on hit? If so, it is ammunition. If ammunition, then it is /50 cost. |

I've seen conflicting opinions about whether shurikens are considered thrown weapons or ammunition. The description says it's treated as ammunition, though the example of a masterworked shuriken (in the Magic Weapons section) says it's 301gp, which would imply that the shuriken is a thrown weapon. Is there a FAQ about this? |
| pres_man05-04-06, 02:35 PM | Is there a FAQ about this? Officially text takes precedent over tables, so the text: Shuriken: A shuriken is a special monk weapon. This designation gives a monk wielding shuriken special options. A shuriken can’t be used as a melee weapon. Although they are thrown weapons, shuriken are treated as ammunition for the purposes of drawing them, crafting masterwork or otherwise special versions of them and what happens to them after they are thrown. Should take precedence over the table entry. I believe the table entry is a hold over from 3rd edition when shuriken were actually thrown weapons and not ammunition. They should Errata it, but I'm not sure they have yet, or even feel overwhelming compelled to. I wonder if the concern was about the returning ability, how many returning weapons can you catch in a given round? |
| Vegepygmy05-04-06, 02:38 PM | Is there a FAQ about this?Yes. Adamantine arrows cost 60 gp + 5 cp (the price of a single arrow). Silvered arrows cost 2 gp + 5 cp. Cold iron arrows cost 1 sp (twice the normal 5 cp cost of a single arrow). |

I wonder if the concern was about the returning ability, how many returning weapons can you catch in a given round? I would say "as many weapons that you have free hands for, that you've thrown". So if you throw 3 throwing axes in one round hand have 1 hand free, then 2 of those axes are gonna be at your feet. If you have 2 hands free, then only 1 will be on the ground. Anyhow, I'm thinking that shurikens should be treated like arrows, bolts and sling bullets, costing 7gp a piece for a masterworked version (or 350 for 50 of them), break on a hit and have the 50% breakage chance on a miss. They're basically "thrown ammo", since standard ammunition denotes a launcher of some sort (bow and arrow, crossbow and bolt, etc). So 2,350gp for 50 +1 Shurikens, 8,350gp for 50 +1 Flaming Shurikens, etc... Yes. Adamantine arrows cost 60 gp + 5 cp (the price of a single arrow). Silvered arrows cost 2 gp + 5 cp. Cold iron arrows cost 1 sp (twice the normal 5 cp cost of a single arrow). Possible misunderstanding? No big deal. To clarify, I was asking about shurikens. Thanks for the info, though. :) |
