My group just got back to our home town after a several session mission that took us from about lvl 5 to lvl 8, and we're getting ready to outfit ourselves with spiffy new magic items. As our parties resident artificer, i realized when i was reading over the base costs for magic items that i don't know if the base cost is what the item actually costs to create, or if that is what it would cost to buy the item from a shop (minus masterwork, etc.). If someone could help clarify exactly how that works that would be awesome. P.S. While I'm at it, if a PC were to craft armor out of Mithral, would the listed price for a Mithral item in the DMG be halved as well? Thanks much guys! |

I say roughly because you have to pay for any special materials and such, the full cost of which is added to the non-material creation costs. For instance, a magic weapon requires enchantment of a masterwork weapon. So you have to already have the MW weapon. You then pay half the base cost of adding the relevant enchantment. So a +1 longsword costs 2315 = 2000 for the enchantment + 300 for masterwork quality of the weapon + 15 the base weapon cost. To create it, you halve the enchantment cost and pay a grand total of 1315gp, plus the XP loss. Special materials cost, I believe, is just something you have to pay for, and you don't get a discount for that for making it yourself. But bear in mind that some materials costs INCLUDE the masterwork cost, so you don't have to pay the extra 300 to make a weapon mithral, for instance. See the description of mithral. At least, that's how I think it all works. :D |
