Hey, um, I looking to make some new weapons, but I can't think of any good ideas. I'm not looking for another sword, or some slight variasion of previous weapons. I mean, really creative, original ideas. There are some incredibly intelligent people out there, or atleast creative ones.

-Oh yeah, the katana is cool, just not cost effective (in d&d anyways)

In light of the holiday fast approaching regarding a certain shepherd I feel the need to post this:

Crooked Staff: A wooden staff about 5 feet in length with a U shaped crook at one end. 1d6/x2 Bludgeoning, may make trip attempts, if you fail on your trip attempt you may drop the crooked staff to avoid being tripped.

Basically this is a quarterstaff that gives up the ability to be used as a double weapon in exchange for the ability to make trip attacks. And it has the whole shepherd/farmboy character background build in, or could make for a cool weapon when in a shepherd disguise.

I may have some others to post later, but this is one that I've added recently that I thought I would share.

Do you want creative stats, or just unusual, or at least uncommon, weapons?

If the latter, there's always the kopis/falcata, yataghan, New Kingdom Egyptian two-hand thrusting sword (resembles a very short spear), Roman pilum and pugio (javelin and dagger, respectively), the schiavona....

There are lots of interesting weapons out there. And best of all, most of them cleanly fit into existing D&D weapon stats.

I think he's looking for weapons new to D&D, not historical weapons that fit existing D&D stats, if I'm wrong and that is what you're looking for there was a good thread on that subject started a few days ago.

As far as weapons new to D&D, I've never seen stats for an Atlatl, or anything like it for that matter, and I think that might be interesting. Maybe stat it like a javelin only exotic with an incresed range increment or damage? Then again maybe its already been done in a supplement I haven't read.

How about some improvised weaponry? Or, if you don't like that, you can go the route of the kama, sickle, scythe and others, and make weapons based off of non-combat tools (referred hereafter as martial, even if they would not be martial weapons).

SPADE
Two-handed, dam 1d8 bludgeoning (1d10 for martial version) x3

SPIKE*
Light, dam 1d4 piercing x3 (x4 for the martial version, with a thrown range increment of 10 ft)

WOOD AXE
Two-handed, dam 1d8 slashing x3 (identical to Battleaxe for martial version)

HOOK AND CHAIN**
Two-handed, dam 1d4 piercing (1d6 for martial version) x3
Because of the hook's shape, it provides a +2 bonus to disarm checks (+4 for the martial version)
Unique to the martial version is a weight on the other end of the chain, allowing it to wrap around an opponent's legs and be used for trip attacks.
Optionally, you could make this a reach weapon due the length of the chain, but it's probably not realistic.

BALL AND CHAIN***
One-handed, dam 1d6 (1d8 martial) bludgeoning (bludgeoning and piercing in martial version) x2
Can be used for trip attacks.
Unique to martial version, has reach. However, using the reach requires two hands.

PITCHFORK
Identical to a trident. But it's totally a pitchfork.

TORCH
The book already tells you how to handle an improvised torch weapon. But as for a martial version...
One-handed, dam 1d6 bludgeoning + 1 fire damage. Critical is x2, but the fire damage is tripled - and due to the weapon's innate connection with fire, this carries over to the Flaming Burst enchantment (therefore, a +1 flaming burst combat torch would do 2d6+2 bludgeoning damage on a critical hit, but 2d10+3 fire damage).

And now, some non-improvised weaponry...

KNUCKLE BLADES
The fingers slip into rings, like knuckle dusters. On the other end of the rings (facing outward) is a blade.
Light, dam 1d4 slashing x2/19-20
Provides a +8 bonus against being disarmed, but cannot be thrown when wielded (even with Throw Anything feat or other stuff). Can be used without penalty in a grapple by user proficient in its use.

INSERT-COOL-NAME-FOR-WHAT-IS-BASICALLY-A-BLADED-TONFA-HERE
Actually, you can't spin it like a tonfa, but it's basically the same grip otherwise. You hold onto a grip while the blade extends down the forearm. The means by which it is wielded limits the potential for pure power, but aids its already keen edge.
One-handed, dam 1d6 slashing x2/18-20

*as in, the sort you'd see in a railway. Not that there are trains in D&D, but there's probably spikes somewhere.

**I think there's a hook like I'm thinking of on boats or something, though I don't know what for. I think hooks of this type are also used to hang sides of meat, too.

***Think like on a prisoner.

I think he's looking for weapons new to D&D

Well technically.. those weapons would be new to D&D. They would just have the same stats as existing D&D weapons.

But I think that's the best way to go. There are only SO many stat combinations possible within D&D's framework that it's silly to think that you could consistently create new, -balanced- weapons. At least, that's my feeling on it.

see, the problem with "AWESOME ORIGINAL EFFECTIVE WEAPONS!@!!" is that history has already taken almost all the good ones.

Lets say you want a polearm or staff weapon like an axe, but instead of an axe you want a big bladed ring or something simliar... thats called a Fire-Wind Wheel and it exists. How about a club that can launch projectiles? Atl-atl.

unless you're looking for horribly fantastical weapons that have no practical use in the real world, but sound cool from a fantasy standpoint: Spiked Chain, Dire Flail, etc...

How's this? :)

Exotic Weapon

Umbrella - 1d4 20x2 bludgeoning, can be used to make trip attacks.

As a move action the wielder may open the umbrella to grant themselves total cover. If a piercing weapon beats the umbrella's hardness it passes through and deals damage normally if it hits, but the umbrella is not damaged.

Not terribly sure on the cost. 50gp perhaps?

Well, I know I'm asking a kinda dumb question seeing as there are many weapons already in D&D, but snicker's bladed tonfa thing was pretty cool. I was also looking anything that was also historical, anything undone already. I also liked snicker's ball and chain. And although they are like other weapons, the kopis and pugio were kinda cool looking. Thanks to all of ya for helpin'!

Oxgoad
1d4, crit 20, x4, bludgeoning
2sp, hard. 5 HP 2

If your name is Shamgar
2d8, crit 15-20, x6, bludgeoning/piercing
2sp, hard. 20 HP 20

Note the oxgoad does not change appearance when wielded by Shamgar.

I always wondered how versitile a gun-blade would be. ranged explosive damage as well as the crit range of a long sword...

"This specimen seems to be broken"

or maybe gun-blade-chucks... :D

GG!

If you got the sword-chocks idea from where I think, you know whats wrong. Besides that, what's an oxgoad?
Catra

12-20-05, 07:45 PM
An oxgoad is basically a short iron blunted spear. Read the Bible for the Shamgar reference. :D

Raist, the gunblade like the kind Squall and Seifer use would be functionally falchions. Wether you can have explosive ammunition for the pistol part of the weapon is up to your DM. Mine shot lightning bolts.

The ones the Galbadians use would probably be bastard swords, and again, the ammunition available to you is up to your DM.

This weapon is inspired by what I've heard some hoplites used to use, but whatever, I'm no history buff, so the flavour on this one will have to be as bad as the bastard sword-katana thing until I can find a bettre name.

Basically, it's a long spear or pike, which you wield in one hand, with a shield in the other. A one-handed reach weapon

Not sure if it's balanced like this:

Exotic weapon:
"So-called hoplite spear" Damage for medium: 1d8, critical range: 20/*3.
Has reach

correct me if the flavour is all wrong if you like. I'm open to suggestions on the name
Also, it might be too strong like this, or two weak. If too weak, maybe it could have set against charge
If too strong, maybe *2 critical, or -2 penalty to hit because honestly, I have no idea how anyone managed to hold a 10ft spear in one hand and be any amount of precise(but I've heard about it, and even if my source isn't good, this is D&D after all)

You could make it strapped to your arm and wielded like a police baton.
